Our residents prize driving on well-maintained roads that offer them views of over 178,000 acres of prime Maryland farmland, carry them past 268 miles of shoreline, and safely lead them through five delightful towns steeped in centuries of history. After reviewing activities which would produce the maximum potential economic benefit with the least detrimental impact, the Kent County Economic Development Office (EDO) developed and implemented a major filmindustry inventory program. The program assists the Maryland Film Office of the Maryland Department of Business and Economic Development (DBED) and filmindustry location specialists in finding ideal movie and commercial locations. To further maintain the rural character of the county and leverage the existing agricultural land usage, the EDO has undertaken a major vineyard expansion effort. After consulting with the Maryland Grape Growers Association and the Maryland Wineries Association, EDO Director Jack Steinmetz determined that the three necessary ingredients for a successful grape growing/winery region—certain soil conditions, an interest on the part of land owners and investors, and a ready market for the end product—were present in Kent County. Located in Chestertown, Washington College is a renowned liberal arts school of 1,400 students. The college works closely with county businesses to provide innovative means to train and motivate future businesspeople, many of whom remain in the area after graduation. Close proximity to quality medical facilities is crucial to any community, and the Chester River Health System fills that requirement. The health system attracts numerous medical professionals into a number of sub-specialty office locations. Our business community consists of manufacturing concerns, leading cement-products providers, healthcare providers, farming, wholesale nurseries, and marine-related industries. It also includes small art businesses, entrepreneurial endeavors such as book publishing, and a strong theater and arts climate. The Economic Development Office galvanizes our business interests using the intrinsic resources of Kent County: our land, our water, our people, and our heritage.
