It’s referred to locally as “Maryland’s Eastern Shore,“ but we call it the “Environment Peninsula.” With four major river systems and over 600 miles of waterfront shoreline, the land and adjacent waters of Talbot County support hardwood forests and poultry, grain, and seafood processing, all of which contribute to the county’s economic base. Today, Talbot County offers an accessible yet secure environment in which to conduct business, and a remarkable “test bed” for environmental sciences. Environment technologies—including such disciplines as toxicology research, environmental monitoring, geospatial and graphic information systems, and scientific instrumentation— complement the current base of small to mid-sized companies already located in the county. Recent growth in some of these industries has created a demand for bio/life scientists and computer-related talent. The Cooperative Oxford Laboratory, an interdisciplinary facility made up of the U.S. Coast Guard, the Maryland Department of Natural Resources, and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), is the only federal lab of its kind located on the Chesapeake Bay. The laboratory monitors the ecosystem of the bay, while the Oxford Coast Guard Station has jurisdiction for providing security to the entire Chesapeake Bay Watershed. Talbot County provides an historic and rural community for your technology company. A majority of the county population is clustered around the town of Easton, where Federal-style architecture dominates the downtown center. Easton serves as the cultural, commercial, financial, and medical hub for the mid-shore region. The Easton Airport, a general-aviation airport located at the north entrance to town, is the second-busiest airport in Maryland. The county economy has remained healthy, due, in part to a diversified industrial base supported with seven industrial parks. Large-sector employers include food production, manufacturing, commercial trade, technology based businesses, professional services, and medical/healthcare. The largest employer, Shore Health/University of Maryland Medical System, employs 1,200 medical professionals and health workers and has just completed a $30-million expansion at the Memorial Hospital at Easton. Talbot County continues to grow and prosper as a regional hub center. We would welcome the opportunity to discuss relocating your business here, especially if you’re interested in “bringing your science projects to our back yard.” Enrollment 2,579 Degrees 194 2008 RELOCATE MARYLAND 43 http://www.talbotcountymd.gov http://www.MarylandLife.com http://www.tourtalbot.org http://www.tcps.k12.md.us
