Coupled with ample job opportunities, a world-class educational system, and a revitalized downtown in Hagerstown, Washington County is a crossroads of commerce and opportunity. Our productive, dedicated, and well-rounded workforce of 400,000 has made the county a choice destination for manufacturing, financial service, and distribution companies. Over 14 percent of our workforce is involved in manufacturing activities, twice the average for the state of Maryland. Government, business, and community organizations partner together to help diversify the economy. As a result, higher-paying jobs are being created in aero-defense, engineering, and advanced-technology sectors. Recent company expansions and relocations provide examples of the strong economic growth in the county. Volvo Powertrain North America announced that Hagerstown would be its North American headquarters and just completed a $160-million investment in its facility. Cinetic Landis Corp., a global manufacturer of precision grinding systems, is constructing a new 110,000-squarefoot, state-of-the-art manufacturing center. Liberty Property Trust, which owns and manages office and industrial space, is constructing a 1.8-million-square-foot Class-A distribution complex strategically located along the I-81 corridor. Investment in the local education system is paying large dividends. According to U.S. News & World Report, 23 percent of Maryland’s “Best High Schools” are in Washington County. Hagerstown Community College (HCC), the fastest-growing community college in the state, is involved in training the workforce of the future. HCC started a new biotechnology program and constructed 4,000 square feet of biotech wet-lab space in its Technology Innovation Center (TIC). The TIC, one of the largest business incubators in the state, provides business-development assistance and laboratory, flex space, and offices for technology start-ups, manufacturers, and biotechnology firms. A revitalized Arts & Entertainment District in downtown Hagerstown complements shopping, historical sites, and museums in Washington County. Residents and visitors are discovering a wonderful collection of beautifully renovated retail shops, restaurants, and condominiums, all within walking distance of cultural attractions such as the historic Maryland Theatre and the Washington County Museum of Fine Arts. With over 43 parks, including the Antietam National Battlefield, C&O Canal, and Appalachian Trail, the opportunities for hiking, biking, and leisure activities are unlimited in Washington County. 44 RELOCATE MARYLAND 2008 http://www.hagerstownedc.org http://www.marylandmemories.org http://www.MarylandLife.com http://www.wcboe.k12.md.us
