For the Civil War Museum and Marshland Nature Center, please call in advance for current hours. Point Lookout is open from sunrise to sunset year around. Some facilities have limited operations prior to and after the Memorial Day weekend to Labor Day weekend. Point Lookout occasionally fills to capacity on summer and holiday weekends. Call 301-872-5688 to check visitation volume. The museum’s exhibits trace the history of English colonization in Maryland with emphasis on the landing of the first 140 colonists on near-by St. Clement’s Island in 1634. The museum also holds artifacts that tell the story of life on the Potomac River in earlier times. On the grounds is a 19th century one-room school used until the 1960s and relocated from nearby Charlotte Hall. Maryland Civil War Trails Site. The museum has a pier and docking facilities, and offers weekend seasonal water taxi service to the island. Group and student tours available. The museum and the Crab Claw Museum store open Mar. 25–Sept. 30, 7 days a week, 10 a.m.–5 p.m. Oct.1–Mar.24, Wed.–Sun., noon–4 p.m. Water taxi rides Sat. and Sun., Memorial Day weekend–end of Sept., weather permitting. SOTTERLEY PLANTATION 44300 Sotterley Lane Hollywood, MD 20636 www.sotterley.org, 301-373-2280 Overlooking the scenic Patuxent River, the plantation encompasses nearly 100 acres of open fields, gardens, and shoreline. Sotterley Plantation is the sole surviving Tidewater plantation in Maryland that is open to the public. Construction of this now rare “earthfast” dwelling began in the early 1700s. The house grew over time into a rambling residence featuring fine period woodwork. Over 20 outbuildings are part of the site’s 300+ year evolution including a customs warehouse, smoke house, and an original slave cabin. TUDOR HALL 41680 Tudor Place Leonardtown, MD 20650 www.stmaryshistory.org, 301-475-2467 Tudor Hall was originally built in 1744, as a small house with additions as early as the 1760s. This Georgian-style house became the home of Phillip Key, uncle of Francis Scott Key, author of the Star Spangled Banner. Unusual features of the house are the inset portico, the main hall’s hanging staircase, and a “triple fireplace” in the kitchen. Maryland War of 1812 Site. Tudor Hall serves as the research library for the St. Mary’s County Historical Society and also houses the Historical Society’s bookstore with books on genealogy, and local and regional history. Tudor Hall is open Tues.–Fri., 9 a.m.–4 p.m. The Research Center is open Thurs.–Fri., 11 a.m.–4 p.m. and on the 1st , 3rd, and 5th Sat., 10 a.m.–2 p.m. RELIGIOUS FREEDOM BY-WAY AND RELIGIOUS HERITAGE SITES St. Mary’s colonial churches and religious sites form part of Maryland’s Religious Freedom By-Way. The Maryland Scenic By-Ways Guide, our Historic Church brochure and our African-American Heritage brochure, which includes our historic black churches, are all available at the Welcome Center. CIVIL WAR TRAILS SITES Although no battles were fought here, St. Mary’s County has a rich Civil War Era history.
