Discover St. Mary's County 2009 - (Page 19) LIGHTHOUSE LOVERS St. Mary’s County has four great lighthouses to explore, each with its own great story. Explore by boat or on foot! See complete listings under Historic Sites and Museums (page 17) and State Parks (pages 24 & 28). the Point Lookout lighthouse and was built in 1851, also by John Donahoo. It stood on St. Clement’s Island (also known as Blackistone Island) until it burned in 1956. Reconstruction of the lighthouse was completed in 2008. It is now part of St. Clement’s Island State Park. Accessible by water (a seasonal water taxi runs from the nearby museum). PINEY POINT LIGHTHOUSE The lighthouse and keeper’s quarters were built by John Donahoo in 1836. The circular tower stands 35 feet tall. The oldest lighthouse on the Potomac, it was a working beacon until 1964. It is now part of the Piney Point Lighthouse Museum and Historic Park. Accessible by land and water. POINT LOOKOUT LIGHTHOUSE The Lighthouse commands the southernmost tip of the St. Mary’s County peninsula. It was built by master lighthouse builder John Donahoo in 1830. He built many of the lighthouses along the Chesapeake Bay. It is now part of Point Lookout State Park. Accessible by land. The lighthouse is open for tours on the first Saturday of April, May, June and August; and the second Saturday of July and September. POINT NO POINT LIGHTHOUSE Completed in 1905 with great difficulty, the octagon-shaped lighthouse stands 52 feet above the water and lies two miles off shore. Accessible by water only.
