You are now part of our story that started 375 years ago when Maryland began here. We treasure our maritime and agricultural heritage and take pride in the high-tech nature of our major employer, the U.S. Navy. This combination gives us the best of two worlds – a foundation of history expressed at spectacular venues and festivals and a modern edge derived from a highly-educated, technology-based workforce. As the elected Board of County Commissioners, we have the privilege of helping to chart the future of this community. We are committed to preserving our special quality of life while warmly welcoming visitors and new residents to our county. We’re delighted you found this commemorative guide to St. Mary’s County and that you’ll be joining us for the festivities as we celebrate Maryland’s 375th birthday. Enjoy reading our story and enjoy your stay. Sincerely, BOARD OF COUNTY COMMISSIONERS, ST. MARY’S COUNTY Francis Jack Russell, President Kenneth R. Dement, Commissioner Lawrence D. Jarboe, Commissioner Thomas A. Mattingly, Sr., Commissioner Daniel H. Raley, Commissioner State of Maryland OFFICE OF THE GOVERNOR Dear Friends, The Great State of Maryland was established in St. Mary’s County in 1634 along the banks of the Potomac River. As a result, the story of St. Mary’s County and history of Maryland are irrevocably intertwined. I congratulate the many organizations who have collaborated to produce “Celebrate 375!” I also welcome the many visitors who will venture to St. Mary’s County and our state during this commemorative year. While many parts of our lives have changed over the past 375 years, the values that characterized early Marylanders remain with us today—a love of democracy, religious tolerance, a commitment to creating thriving communities and an adventurous entrepreneurial spirit. This year, the citizens of St. Mary’s County will eagerly share this story beginning in March with Maryland Day, which commemorates the day colonists first landed on St. Clement’s Island, and continuing with special activities throughout 2009. I encourage those inside and outside of Maryland to visit this beautiful and historic part of our state. Sincerely, Martin O’Malley Governor 8 ST. MARY’S COUNTY VISITORS GUIDE 2009
