BROWSER T News of Particular Interest to Society Members East Coast Conference Set for Engineers Week Following in the 20-year tradition of the Eastern Technical and Career Conference (ETCC), the Hispanic STEM Institute will offer SHPE student and professional members in Region IV, Region VII and beyond quality programs focused on leadership, academic excellence, technology and professional development. The Hispanic STEM Institute will be held in the Washington, D.C., area during National Engineers Week on February 21-23, 2008. This will mark the beginning of a new tradition for SHPE members on the East Coast. Similar to ETCC, the Hispanic STEM Institute will include workshops on leadership and professional development, information sessions on various companies and government agencies and plenty of opportunities for networking. The Institute will also incorporate a new element: tracks specifically focused to meet the academic and leadership needs of the student attendees, who will be placed in various tracks based on their current GPAs and leadership experience. The pre-college, undergraduate and graduate offerings will be expanded beyond the East Coast, allowing students from across the country to apply for the Institute. Set just outside the nation’s capital during a week when engineers have the national spotlight, the Hispanic STEM Institute is an event you definitely won’t want to miss! INROADS Offers a Competitive Edge Hispanic engineering students looking to step into corporate America immediately upon graduation are invited to explore internship opportunities with INROADS. Over the past few years, INROADS has committed itself to working more closely with the Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers to identify the Latino technical talent keenly desired by its 660 corporate clients, many of which are Fortune 500 companies. Each year, these clients turn to INROADS to provide them with skilled interns to work in practically every department. In response, INROADS places more than 5,000 young men and women in salaried internships through which they can absorb a thorough knowledge of the company’s processes and the industry as a whole. Engineering students have worked modeling systems, testing products, designing layouts and analyzing data, thus giving them a competitive edge over their peers with regard to experience and corporate exposure. Steven Medina is among six Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers members at The University of Texas at Arlington currently holding INROADS internships. The electrical engineering junior and SHPE student chapter president recently completed his second INROADS internship, which placed him at Electronic Data Systems (EDS) Corporation. Over the summer, Medina conducted computer program testing and facilitated daily conference calls where supervisors discussed cycles that would run on a nightly basis. This led to a new assignment, updating the escalation procedures for these cycles. Medina said that INROADS provided training on professional presentation, working under pressure and communicating well with others – all which empowered him to meet the intense challenges of his assignments. “I highly recommend that SHPE members get involved with INROADS,” Medina said. “It has programs to help interns become more effective and gives students an 85 percent chance of getting hired full time after they graduate,” he said. I SHPE R Conference 2007 NOTAR It’s no surprise that Dora Maria Abreu, SHPE National Secretary and lifetime member, was recognized by Maybelline’s recent hunt for 10 inspirational women who make a difference in their community through education. Abreu has always made time to remain intimately connected to her community. Locally, she has developed her own computer workshops for students and adults, mentors high school and college students, and provides tutoring for SAT math and reading preparation as well as for engineering and technology curricula. She has also traveled to the Dominican Republic and created a training program so that teachers can more effectively use computers in their classrooms. In addition to being a member of the NAACP Hermandad de Sigma Iota , Alpha, Inc., SUNY Stony Brook Alumni Association and other organizations committed to giving back to the community, she also serves on various boards related to local, national and international educational programs. Abreu said that she was excited and humbled by the award, which recognizes service to the community, especially her work in mentoring teachers and developing scholarships for women studying engineering, science and mathematics at her alma mater, SUNY Stony Brook. Abreu donated her $10,000 award to For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology (FIRST), an organization that fosters children’s interest in technology. Victor G. Cervantes was recently appointed National Graduate Student Representative, a new position on the SHPE National Board of Directors. Currently pursuing a Master’s degree in civil and environmental engineering at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, he completed his undergraduate degree at California State University, Northridge, where he served in various capacities on the SHPE-CSUN executive board. As Cervantes takes on his new position, he hopes to motivate more undergraduate students to become involved in research early in their academic careers so that they may be more competitive when applying to graduate programs across the country. “Graduate school is the means by which SHPE may continue to be The Source for Latino talent in the fields of math, science, and engineering, he said. Cervantes challenges both ” undergraduate and graduate students to showcase their talents during the competitions at the SHPE Conference as well as to participate in AHETEMS programs. 10
