National Honors Chapter of the Year Awards Professional Chapter Adelante Awards The National Professional Chapter Adelante Awards presented at the 2007 SHPE Conference are based on the 2006-2007 End of Year Reports which professional chapters submit every year. These reports contain a summary of the yearly activities of each SHPE professional chapter and help assess how chapters are measuring up to SHPE’s mission and goals. This year, the National Affairs Committee (NAC) received approximately 20 reports. The SHPE Executive National Board was charged with qualifying the End of Year Reports which were eligible for national awards. The quality of professional programs was quite impressive, according to Barry Cordero, NAC co-chairman. This year SHPE professional chapters worked hand-in-hand with student chapters in the areas of outreach and career development. In addition, each chapter’s programs were rated for nomination as a “Best Practice Program.” This new effort is designed to strengthen chapters by gathering details on the most successful programs to provide them to all chapters around the nation. Student Chapter Awards The National Student Chapter Awards presented at the 2007 SHPE Conference are based on the 2006-2007 End of Year Reports submitted by every student chapter. These reports contain a summary of the yearly activities of each SHPE student chapter and help assess how chapters progress toward achieving SHPE’s mission and goals. This year, the National Affairs Committee (NAC) received approximately 86 reports, the highest number received in the last five years. The committee consists of professional members from every SHPE region. This year NAC changed the grading rubric, adding “Best Practice” nominations for each chapter. This will allow all chapters to adopt successful programs in the future. Judges were impressed with the professionalism and dedication demonstrated by the chapters as well as how each chapter is using the National Point System as a tool for success.
