Competitions AHETEMS Design Competition Sponsored by National Science Foundation The AHETEMS Design Competition was developed to stimulate a creative, intellectual and entrepreneurial spirit; develop technical presentation skills; engender a team spirit; and instill the cooperation essential in a design project. This competition demonstrates to industry the technical and business capabilities of Hispanic engineering and science students and illustrates that a successful idea need not be expensive to design and build. The commercially marketable product they designed had to center on an aeronautics/aerospace theme. The designs could not duplicate existing commercial products, but could offer improvements to them. The designs had to be creative and demonstrate technical merit. Design teams were required to submit a design concept abstract and a design concept paper that technically explained and illustrated the design concept. These included an introduction, background information, intent of design, statement of problem and proposed or actual design testing and evaluation. Teams were encouraged to include detailed illustrations of the dimensions, scale, orthographic projection (top, side, front views), 3-D view of the design and a developmental/production cost analysis A panel of engineering professionals from industry, government and academe selected team finalists from the pool of qualified entries. Finalists received up to $500 for their design project along with complimentary conference registration and up to $100 travel stipends for each team member and a mentor. The finalists will present the working prototype or process for their design on Thursday, November 1, 2007, and compete for first, second and third place awards. SHPE Academic Olympiad Sponsored by Lehman Brothers and NASA The Academic Olympiad is the premier academic competition among students at the conference. The Olympiad brings together competitive teams of SHPE undergraduate students to face off in a “Jeopardy”-like competition. Each student chapter that sends 10 or more students to the conference is required to compete. The preliminary round, on Thursday, November 1, 2007, will challenge teams to a 60-minute, 50-question written exam. Questions range from multidisciplinary science and engineering theories and complex math equations to more contemporary questions on SHPE and Hispanics in science and technology. The seven teams (one from each region) receiving top marks in the written exam will move on to the final competition. The Academic Olympiad Game Show will take place on Friday evening, November 2, 2007. During this oral competition, teams will have mere seconds to answer questions accurately, and incorrect answers will be penalized with point deductions. Three rounds of increasing value will determine the national champion. SHPE will sponsor the registration of the winning team from each region to the SHPE Conference along with a $100 travel stipend for each team member. SHPE will award scholarships to the individual members of the top three teams (including alternates). The first and second place winners will receive $1,000 and $750, respectively, while the third place winners will each receive $500. Morgan Stanley Web Coding Competition Information is not only ubiquitous but also polymorphic, making it challenging to manage, store and retrieve. Over the past few years, the nature of information has changed dramatically – from structured data that can be organized neatly into rows and columns in a database, to unstructured data including documents, Web pages, blogs, wikis, instant messages, e-mails, audio and video. Morgan Stanley accumulates terabytes of data in all of these forms. Today, more than 80 percent of all information in an enterprise is unstructured, creating both a challenge and an opportunity for the enterprise. The challenge lies in how to retrieve relevant information effectively; the opportunity lies in using that information to gain true business insight. Organizations have realized that merely being able to find information through traditional keyword search methods is insufficient. To gain true business insight, they need to understand the meaning of the data in a timely and efficient manner. This competition offered participants an opportunity to pitch their innovations and knowledge of search technology to Morgan Stanley. The goal was to build a search application that could extract relevant information from diverse forms of information 108 repositories and present it in a usable and meaningful format. The solution could be a desktop, Web or mobile application. Teams didn’t need to implement a search across all mentioned data sources/forms, but could choose to process the most relevant data forms. They were free to choose any technology and tools. Participants are SHPE members and registered conference attendees with a minimum 3.0 grade point average. Teams consist of two or three people with a shared interest in software development and programming. All entries included a working demo of the application, a design/architecture diagram with a description of all technologies used and a software feature sheet. They will be judged on functionality (features); creativity; visualization and effective consumption of search results; scalability; expressiveness of query language; search results relevance, precision and recall; extensibility (range of data formats able to be processed); efficiency and/or speed of search; and the group presentation. First place winners will share up to $3,000 ($1,000 per person), second place winners up to $2,250 ($750 per person) and third place winners up to $1,500 ($500 per person). SHPE R Conference 2007
