One of the most remarkable events that the chapter created and hosted was the SHPE Day at the Exploratorium in San Francisco. For this event, families from all over the Bay Area received free admission into the Exploratorium to learn about engineering and to speak to chapter volunteers about their careers. Overall, the ability of SHPE-SFBA members to consistently deliver to the organization year after year is astounding. This year promises to be no exception. Through the strength of chapter unity and strong professionalism, we can accomplish many goals. Submitted by Alex Yupanqui Student Chapter Webmaster RSR Update Professional networking at the Puget Sound summer kickoff event. Region I hosted the September NBOD meeting in Portland, Oregon. Region I’s dedication, preparation, and participation continue to make it stand out at the SHPE events. In September, the NBOD held its meeting in Portland, Oregon, and RSR Linda Murillo and Regional VP Kathleen Gonzales presented the goals for the region. During Bomba Blast, a new event, Region I professionals held mock interviews and resume workshops so students could prepare for the hundreds of companies in Philadelphia. The region is excited to have a huge presence in the Technical Paper Competition, a great way for undergraduates and graduates to showcase their research for a panel of prestigious judges and compete for prizes. Three Region I chapters will compete in the Design Competition. Last but not least, many of the Academic Olympiad participants will be Region I members. To make a long story short, “If you ain’t I, you ain’t SHPE!” Submitted by Linda Murillo Regional Student Representative event with new contacts and new friends. People were also encouraged to see how we can leverage each other to collaborate on events and share best practices. A great example of this is the formation of a Puget Sound Hispanic Professionals Steering Committee which will have at least one representative from each Hispanic organization. SHPE is expanding its network and bringing together many different industries, companies and people, which can all be leveraged in forming relationships with unlimited potential in the future. Submitted by Elizabeth Galaviz Professional Chapter President Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo SHPE-CPSLO is very excited about this year. Through generous company sponsorship, we are poised to have an excellent year and accomplish our goals. Having attracted over 50 new students, we anticipate having over 130 members! Our ACE program and tutoring hours are set and already in motion as part of our effort to help the surrounding community. We are reaching out to Laguna Middle School and Bishop Peaks Elementary and also will be taking steps to start a SHPE Jr. chapter in the Santa Maria area. Back on campus, our SHPE chapter is also working closely with National Society of Black Engineers (NSBE), American Indian Science and Engineering Society (AISES), and the Society of Women Engineers (SWE) in an effort to have a joint study hall to encourage academic excellence. We are enthusiastic about the Philadelphia conference. We have several members who have applied for the GRE/GRAD lab, and we will be competing in the Academic Olympiad. Submitted by David Sequeira Student Chapter President San Francisco Bay Area Professional Chapter Puget Sound Professional Chapter Hispanic professional organizations from different industries came together for a kickoff event, networking and having fun in an informal setting of pool, games, good food and good company. It brought together not only different types of engineers, but also lawyers, accountants, Hispanics with M.B.A.’s and community leaders who supported all of these organizations. SHPE was at the forefront in cosponsoring and organizing the event, and it was a huge success. We received many positive messages about how it was great to see Hispanics who were successful in so many areas of expertise, and people left the 142 SHPE-SFBA board members unite for chapter retreat. After wrapping up a very successful 2006-2007, SHPE-SFBA is once again off to a promising start. Through the diligence of a very motivated board and the consistent leadership of its president, Andres Martin, the chapter has rapidly organized and executed several key events. At its first meeting, the board developed several new practices to enhance professional participation and to strengthen ties to student chapters. The chapter hosted a professional mixer to welcome the local professional community. It also participated in the SHPE-SFSU Welcome Barbecue and the Region I Post NILA meeting, consistent with the goal of strengthening the chapter’s ties to student California State University, Fresno Having recently celebrated its 25th anniversary, our chapter finds itself at a crossroads. Following in the steps of our founding members, we continue to be a source of technical and leadership empowerment in the area.
