H I S PA N I C H E R I TA G E Submarine Technology Furthering the Field of Target Physics In his nearly 35 years of service as a scientist for the U.S. Navy, Carlos Godoy has developed unparalleled expertise in the field of target physics – the study of how submarines respond to underwater sonar signals. As senior scientist for modeling and simulation for torpedoes, Godoy oversees the modeling of the active acoustic response of target submarines in simulation environments. Being able to detect objects and then classify their acoustical response allows a fire control person to, among other things, discriminate between a submarine echo and false alarms and eventually determine where to direct the weapon. During the early 1980’s, he developed the concept for the fast/deep target in response to the appearance of the Soviet ALFA Submarine, which traveled at much higher speeds and dove much deeper than did U.S. submarines at the time. To redesign torpedoes to respond to this new type of submarine, Godoy and his team were tasked with the development of a mobile target that could go as fast and deep as the Soviet submarines. Godoy was also responsible for studying how submarines respond to lower frequency active sonar signals. Lowering the frequency of sonar has many advantages. This work allowed the Navy to understand the response of a submarine, which helped in reducing Carlos Godoy oversees the modeling of the active acoustic response of target submarines, such as the KILO threat sub, in simulation environments. 1859 Advancing Submarine Design Catalonian physicist and inventor Narciso Monturiol designed one of the most advanced submarines of his time in 1856. Originally built to reduce the manual labor of and risk to Spanish coral divers off the coast of Cadaques, “Ictineo,” a manpowered submarine, was launched in 1859 off the coast of Barcelona. He later redesigned his machine to be powered by steam and launched the Ictineo II in 1864. Although the submarine was able to be submerged for up to seven hours and to depths of 30 meters, Monturiol was unable to obtain commercial success and eventually focused on the A replica of Monturiol’s 1864 Ictineo II in Barcelona, Spain. recovery of shipwrecks. Furthermore, if an engineer can understand how an object reflects the energy that has been transmitted and model it mathematically, he or she can have a major impact on sonar simulation environments. As the lead for international collaborations, Godoy was involved in such projects as torpedo super-cavitating initiatives with Germany, threat submarine target modeling initiatives with France and Australia, and target/wake modeling efforts that supported the development of the Australia Torpedo Analysis Facility. Godoy, who was born in Lima, Peru, enjoys the diversity and collaborative nature of international projects. The recipient of B.S. and M.S. degrees in electrical engineering from Tufts University, Godoy said that he finds problem solving the most rewarding aspect of his work. “It’s never the same job, and it forces you to learn related fields to comprehend the problem,” he said. Godoy currently works at the Weapons Analysis Facility, a high fidelity, hardwarein-the-loop, simulation for torpedoes. The work in target physics has enabled the development of very accurate submarine models which are at the core of the evaluation of the performance of U.S. torpedoes. The high fidelity target models allow the fleet to have confidence in its torpedo performance in any engagement environment around the world.
