He then serves as the subject matter expert on business needs for the design teams as designs are developed and assists the business in rationalizing capabilities and adjusting service offers as necessitated by technology options or limitations. Headquartered in Washington, D.C., and with an office in Philadelphia, Amtrak employs approximately 18,600 people and operates passenger service on 21,000 miles of track, connecting 500 destinations in 46 states. In fiscal year 2006, Amtrak served 24.3 million passengers, which marked a company record, said Michael Ramirez, senior director of human resources. With an aging workforce both at Amtrak and the railroad industry, Ramirez said it is a “prime time” for engineers to enter the transportation industry. Amtrak is recognizing an upward trend toward urban population growth, which is requiring more convenient and efficient mass transit and inter-city transportation. Accordingly, engineers are engaged in various disciplines within Amtrak. Civil engineers manage construction projects, while design civil engineers design tracks, bridges, building and culverts. Industrial engineers work to improve production and work gang layouts and shop floor design. Mechanical engineers help design the mechanical systems of buildings, stations and train equipment. Engineering design functions include electrical engineering work on high-voltage power systems, solid state and relay signal systems, and computeraided train dispatching. “All of our engineers can also work in the field using their technical background to manage maintenance and construction forces around the country,” said Ramirez. While Amtrak is nationwide, Public Service Enterprise Group (PSEG), an energy and energy services company based in New Jersey, is regional. PSEG has three main subsidiaries, including Public Service Electric and Gas Company (PSE&G), and employs more than 10,000 people. Its work affects more than 75 percent of New Jersey residents. While approximately 800 employees have “engineer” as part of their job title, the figure is not inclusive of supervisors, managers, directors and vice presidents who may have an engineering background, said Chandra Ledford, enterprise outreach specialist. “There are also a large number of positions that are not specific to the job title ‘engineer’ that still require an engineering background, such as project managers,” she explained. PSEG engineers work in the utility, nuclear plants, generating stations and corporate headquarters, and they perform duties such as planning, strategic development, system design, system development, analysis, operational duties and asset management.
