Ortiz T University of California, San Diego National Graduate Representative Victor Cervantes T University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign D uring the 2007 SHPE Conference, the Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers has the honor and privilege to gather on the decks of the U.S.S. Iwo Jima, a naval ship with a proud record of service as well as a name associated with one of the hardest-won victories by U.S. forces in modern times. We are all familiar with the image — five Marines and a Navy corpsman raising an American flag over a Japanese island, not even 10 square miles in size. That image of victory is forever imprinted on our collective conscious. As the photo was viewed around the world, the American public strengthened its resolve and declared its will for victory. Truly, it represented a turning point. There is no doubt that the sacrifices of American troops on Iwo Jima were the greatest men can make. Our Society, in turn, can draw insight and inspiration from this battle and the great ship named for it. If we were to freeze-frame our Society today, we, too, would be early in our battle. It can be argued that the mere existence of SHPE represents a victory of sorts, but much remains to be done. Success during the battle for Iwo Jima was sometimes measured in yards, the progress was so fierce, and so it is with SHPE. Where we face overwhelming high school drop-out rates, we count as precious every single child who is sufficiently encouraged and supported to pursue STEM in college. We cheer rising test scores in our SHPE Jr. chapters across the nation as the vast majority of Hispanics fall further behind in math skills. We beat the drum until America wakes up to the critical technical shortage that gathers within our borders, even as countries like India and China build industrial and technical momentum. So much of our work is ahead of us. Here at the Society, we have changed the way we do business across the board in order to be ready for the challenges that lay ahead. One brave step was moving our national conference into the fall. It was the right move to better serve our members and our corporate partners, and we’re a better organization for making this decision. With the financial backing of a record 50 Industrial PartnerSHPE Council members and increasing student and professional membership, SHPE is poised to make a stronger impact and create greater access to STEM education and careers for the Hispanic community. Will ships be named after us? Most definitely not. Our legacy will live on — in the Hispanic engineers who come after us. Like the sailors and Marines serving aboard the U.S.S. Iwo Jima today, the courage and commitment of those who came before will serve as inspiration for the greatest of battles.
