Should we consider ourselves successful in meeting our mission? Admittedly, we grow more successful each year in quantity and quality, in developing our members and in reaching out to our community. Are we victorious? Recent statistics say, not yet. According to the National Center for Education Statistics, Latinos make up 14 percent of the U.S. population, but only 3 percent of U.S. scientists and engineers. In 2000, Hispanics still earned just 7 percent of all undergraduate degrees in science and engineering and just 4 percent of all doctorates. Demonstrating how far we still have to go is another report by the Hispanic Association on Corporate Responsibility (HACR), a Washington, D.C.-based organization dedicated to “the inclusion of Hispanics in corporate America.” It noted that Hispanics hold only 1.8 percent (191 of 10,417) of board seats at Fortune 1,000 corporations, and less than 1.1 percent of Hispanic professionals hold executive positions. SHPE has a lot to celebrate. Our students and professionals represent the best and brightest of the engineering and technical professions. Our outreach to Hispanic children grows exponentially each year, as does the number of scholarships we award to Hispanic students. We have new programs for graduate and doctoral students as well as others for entry-level, mid-level and executive professionals. Our Industrial PartnerSHPE Council is at an all-time high with 50 of the nation’s top companies and organizations standing behind the Society. Still, success is not enough. Victory is our goal. The fact that less than 1.1 percent of Hispanic professionals hold executive positions reminds me of how hard we need to work to ensure that we become victorious. My vision is not only for SHPE to have top-level executives as members and supporters, as it does today, but also for it to be an organization with a growing number of members who have advanced to the executive level with the support of SHPE mentors, professional development programs and leadership training. Success is ours as we speak, and while we might not completely achieve it today or even tomorrow, victory is within our grasp. I look forward to celebrating our SHPE successes with you and leveraging them to achieve our long-awaited victory as a SHPE familia.
