STAR National Honors Company of the Year Award eneral Motors has been named Company of the Year by the Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers (SHPE). A member of the Industrial PartnerSHPE Council since 1998, General Motors not only offers financial support but also partners with the Society to help raise financial support for SHPE chapters and scholarships. Over the past six years, two General Motors employees have led the Industrial PartnerSHPE Council. Jose Diaz, currently a Global Manufacturing Systems advisor, was vice chair in 2001 and chair in 2002. Maria Walker, currently a program manager in GM’s Information Systems and Services Division, served as vice chair in 2005 and an extended term as chair from January 2006 through July 2007 as IPC leadership tenures changed to better align with SHPE’s new structure. General Motors has participated and led numerous committees that support SHPE strategies and is an avid supporter of moving the SHPE Conference to the fall so that SHPE members can benefit from greater job opportunities available when the recruiting season is in full gear. General Motors is not only committed to developing cutting-edge technologies and reinventing the automobile as it is known today; it also is dedicated to educating adults and students of all ages, particularly those in the Hispanic community, about important energy, environmental and technology issues. General Motors has created Spanish-language materials that address energy topics increasingly significant in a growing and technologically advanced world. In an effort to encourage Hispanic students to pursue higher education and explore math and science, the General Motors Foundation has partnered with Weekly Reader to provide quality educational resources to teachers, students and parents. These curriculum packages target Hispanic middle and high school students and their families and provide tools to enhance math and science skills. Spanish language versions of the curriculum packets are available on the GMability education website. These candidates are recognized by their leadership within their functional organizations, in the company international news line, in all employee meetings and within their local communities through articles and advertisements. General Motors also recognizes its Hispanic employees through featured print advertising within its SHPE magazine Inner Circle profile, the gm.com/careers website and the General Motors recruiting displays. General Motors’ dedication to the Hispanic community extends to its partnership with numerous professional organizations and formal recruiting relationships with several Hispanic serving institutions including New Mexico State University, the University of Puerto Rico, Mayagüez, and the University of Texas at El Paso. In 2006 over $600,000 was awarded to more than 300 Hispanics in the form of scholarships. This represented 30 percent of all General Motors’ scholarship funding, showing a true commitment to the advancement of Hispanic students.
