AHETEMS GRADUATE PROGRAM & LECTURES Schedule & Welcome Please refer to updated signage at the conference site. SPONSORED BY THE U.S. DEPARTMENT OF DEFENSE AND INTEL CORPORATION This year, AHETEMS Inc. will host a number of events that address the recruitment and retention of Hispanic graduate students. A brief overview of the programs follows. GRE/GRAD Lab Awards NOVEMBER 14-15, 2008 PCC: 212B This two-day event, co-hosted by AHETEMS and The National GEM Consortium, will provide intense training to strengthen the competitive edge of undergraduate students contemplating applying to graduate school. On day one, students will attend a series of sessions that focus on all aspects of the graduate school application. These sessions will address why a student should pursue graduate school, how to choose the right institution and how to fund an advanced degree. It will include experiences from those in the field. In addition, the Department of Defense and Intel will sponsor an invitationonly Graduate/Scholars Luncheon. During a V.I.P. graduate hospitality suite that evening, students will have the opportunity to meet current graduate students and speak with graduate program recruiters and faculty. On day two, representatives from the Princeton Review will lead students through GRE study and test-taking strategies in preparation for the actual GRE test. Later that day, students will attend the Graduate School and Career Fair, where they will visit with representatives from 60 graduate programs. Graduate Institute Sponsored by Intel Corporation NOVEMBER 13-14, 2008 PCC: 212 A/B/C Now in its fourth cycle, the AHETEMS Graduate Institute has grown into an intense two-day event. Engaging seminars will address issues that have an impact on the retention and success of Hispanic graduate students. Topics have included: writing an effective curriculum vitae; conducting an academic job search; pursuing entrepreneurship; making financial investments; understanding opportunities for non-academic research; negotiating the thesis/dissertation writing process; and nurturing the advisor/mentor relationship. In addition, engineering/research ethics, post-doctoral opportunities and graduate funding will be discussed. Graduate students are invited to attend a Thursday hospitality brunch and an evening reception. Several AHETEMS travel grants were awarded on a competitive basis to qualified Hispanic full-time graduate students. On Friday, these graduate students, along with grant recipients from the GRE/GRAD Lab, will attend a special Graduate/Scholars Luncheon. Institute attendees are invited to Friday’s VIP graduate hospitality suite. Graduate/Scholars Luncheon Sponsored by the U.S. Department of Defense (invitation only) Professionals Speakers & Advisors & Networking FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 14, 2008 12:30 p.m. - 2 p.m. PCC: West Hall 2 Sponsored by the Department of Defense, the Graduate/Scholars Luncheon is open to AHETEMS travel grant recipients attending the GRE/GRAD Lab and Graduate Institute, MUST scholars and other selected SHPE students who hold invitations. Participants of the Deans’ Summit are also invited to network with prospective recruits. The luncheon will also serve as a forum to Dr. Woodrow Whitlow Jr., director of the NASA John H. Glenn Research Center, who will be addressing attendees as part of the Distinguished Lecturer Series. (See biography below.) Competitions Pre-College & Teachers Distinguished Lectures Series D istinguished administrators, research faculty, research scientists and engineers will address national issues affecting Hispanics in higher education as well as highlight their innovative research and patented technologies during the AHETEMS Distinguished Lectures Series. The following are the confirmed speakers for this year’s program. Graduates & Deans THURSDAY, NOVEMBER 13, 2008 8:30 a.m. – 9:30 a.m. PCC: 301C Justin Rattner Vice President and Chief Technology Officer Intel Corporation Justin Rattner is the Vice President and Chief Technology Officer (CTO) of Intel Corporation. He is also an Intel Senior Fellow and head of the Corporate Technology Group, directing Intel’s global research efforts in microprocessors, systems and communications, including the company’s disruptive research activity. In 1989, Rattner was named Scientist of the Year by R&D magazine for his leadership in parallel and distributed computer architecture. In December 1996, he was featured as “Person of the Week” by ABC World News for his visionary work on the Department of Energy ASCI Red System, the first computer to sustain one trillion operations per second (one teraFLOPS) and the fastest computer in the world between 1996 and 2000. In 1997, Rattner was honored as one of the Computing 200, the 200 individuals having the greatest impact on the U.S. computer industry today and subsequently profiled in the book “Wizards and Their Wonders” from ACM Press. Rattner has received two Intel Achievement Awards for his work in high performance computing and advanced cluster communication architecture. He is a member of the executive committee of Intel’s Research Council and serves as the Intel executive sponsor for Cornell University, where he is a member of the External Advisory Board for the School of Engineering. Rattner is also a trustee of the Anita Borg Institute for Women and Technology. Rattner joined Intel in 1973. He was named its first Principal Engineer in 1979 and its fourth Intel Fellow in 1988. Prior to joining Intel, Rattner held positions with HewlettPackard Company and Xerox Corporation. . He holds B.S. and M.S. degrees from Cornell University in electrical engineering and computer science. Glenn Research Center Dr. Woodrow Whitlow Jr. is Director of the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) John H. Glenn Research Center at Lewis Field in Cleveland, Ohio. Appointed to this position in 2005, he is responsible for planning, organizing and directing the activities required to accomplish the missions assigned to the center.
