SHPE - Conference 2008 - (Page 104) DISTINGUISHED LECTURES & DEANS’ SUMMIT Please refer to updated signage at the conference site. Schedule & Welcome approximately $500 million, he oversees a work force of approximately 1,680 civil service employees that is supported by approximately 1,580 contractors. The center has 24 major facilities and more than 500 specialized research facilities located at the 350-acre Cleveland site and the 6,400-acre Plum Brook Station site in Sandusky, Ohio. From September 2003 through December 2005, Dr. Whitlow served as the Deputy Director of the NASA John F. Kennedy Space Center. There his duties included assisting the director in determining and implementing center policy and in managing and implementing the center’s missions and agency program responsibilities in the areas of processing, launch and recovery of launch vehicles; processing of spacecraft; and acquisition of launch services. Prior to this appointment as Deputy Director, he served as the Director of Research and Technology at the Glenn Research Center. Dr. Whitlow began his professional career in 1979 as a research scientist at the NASA Langley Research Center, Hampton, Virginia. He assumed various positions of increasing responsibility before moving to the Glenn Research Center in 1998. In 1994, he served as Director of the Critical Technologies Division, Office of Aeronautics, at NASA Headquarters. Dr. Whitlow earned his B.S, M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in aeronautics and astronautics from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. He has written nearly 40 technical papers, most in the areas of unsteady transonic flow and aeroelasticity. Dr. Whitlow has received numerous awards, including U.S. Black Engineer of the Year in Government, NASA Exceptional Awards Service Honor Medal, NASA Equal Opportunity Honor Medal, the (British) Institution of Mechanical Engineers William Sweet Smith Prize and the Presidential Rank of Meritorious Executive. The American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics named him an Associate Fellow in 1993. FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 14, 2008 Pre-College Awards Banquet (admission with ticket only) PCC: West Hall, North Ballroom 7 p.m. Jaime Escalante Jaime Escalante is a remarkable former high school teacher whose underprivileged and mostly Hispanic students have set standards in mathematics unequaled in American education. His fascinating, unforgettable and inspirational story gives a vivid picture of genius in the teaching profession. As the subject of the book “Escalante: The Best Teacher in America,” he is portrayed as the vital, genuine and challenging person his students saw every day. An immigrant from Bolivia, Escalante was also the subject of the movie “Stand and Deliver,” one of 1988’s most acclaimed films. “I’m just a math teacher,” Escalante insists. “I’m just helping my students achieve their highest degree of personal development.” Yet, his persistent, challenging and highly inspirational teaching methods made East Los Angeles’ Garfield High School – a school once plagued by poor funding, constant violence and difficult working conditions – rank seventh nationally in calculus. “I do not believe in the gifted,” says Escalante. “If they have ganas (extreme desire and drive), I can make them do it.” Escalante challenged students who previously had little encouragement to aim high during their lives. Assisted by his gentle coercion, deft showmanship and sheer force of personality, his students pushed themselves to achieve at levels they never imagined possible. Escalante motivated his students to perform through a combination of factors that ranged from strict study requirements to discussions of career possibilities. As a result, Escalante has shown that one teacher can make a big difference in numerous lives. Escalante taught math and physics in Bolivia for 10 years until 1963, when he immigrated to the United States. After receiving an associate’s degree with an emphasis in electronics from Pasadena City College, he worked at Burroughs Corporation while studying at California State University, Los Angeles, to get his teaching credentials. Escalante took a considerable cut in pay to become a math teacher at Garfield High School in 1974. He left Garfield in 1991 to teach at Hiram Johnson High School (Sacramento, California), a diverse and predominantly minority school, with the intention to replicate the success he had in East Los Angeles. In 1998, at the age of 67, Escalante retired from teaching in public schools. In 1999, he was officially inducted into the Teachers Hall of Fame. Today, he teaches part-time at a university in Bolivia and also acts as a consultant/speaker for workshops, lectures and other events in the United States and abroad. ■ Tours Pre-College & Teachers Competitions Professionals Speakers & Advisors & Networking SPONSORED BY THE NATIONAL ACTION COUNCIL FOR MINORITIES IN ENGINEERING (NACME) Deans’ Summit Graduates & Deans Career Fair & Sponsors cademic Deans will be an integral part of the 2008 SHPE Conference. The Deans’ Summit will unite Hispanic leaders from academia in developing an action plan for how SHPE can partner with Hispanic Serving Institutions to increase success rates of Hispanics in STEM fields. The summit will differ from other similar programs in that it includes a strategy session wherein participating deans will be asked to develop a roadmap defining the relationship between SHPE and targeted universities. The goal is to conclude the conference with tangible, measurable steps and policies that both SHPE and academic institutions can implement in an effort to achieve the goal of increasing the success of Hispanics in the STEM fields. Representatives from the White House, National Action Council for Minorities in Engineering (NACME), American Institutes for Research and the National Science Foundation (NSF) have also been invited to attend.
