SHPE - Conference 2008 - (Page 12) BROWSER Internship program for the Baylor College of Medicine, where she conducted scientific research on cisplatin-induced toxicities. Reyna is majoring in civil engineering at Texas A&M University. Grecia Margarita Gonzalez received the Health and Science Award, sponsored by AstraZeneca. A College Board AP Scholar, National Merit Commended Scholar, National Hispanic Scholar Finalist and an International Baccalaureate Diploma candidate, she was one of only five students in the state of California to receive the Seymour Memorial Scholarship Finalist Award in recognition of her outstanding community service and academic excellence. Gonzalez is a recipient of the Gates Millennium Scholarship and the Rensselaer Medal for Math and Science. This fall, Gonzalez began studying biology and engineering at Harvard College after having graduated as valedictorian of Nogales High School in La Puente, California. ■ Regional Science Bowls Scheduled for 2009 The U.S. Department of Energy National Science Bowl encourages students to excel in math and science. By raising the visibility of academic achievement in math and science, the program has succeeded in placing young people on par with their peers who excel in athletics. Once again AHETEMS will be organizing six high school and three middle school tournaments. The SHPE Regional Science Bowl (RSB) engages participating students in an enriching, challenging and competitive environment to motivate and heighten their interest in math and science. The fast-paced, intense competition is a “Jeopardy”-style round-robin, single-elimination and/or double-elimination tournament. Teams composed of four competitors and an alternate are challenged to answer a range of questions in math, chemistry, biology, physics, earth science and general science. The winning team members and coach from each (RSB) receive an invitation to compete at the DOE National Science Bowl in Washington, D.C. ■ The deadline to register is January 10, 2009. OneSHPE Update: NILA case study videos have been uploaded to YouTube (search shpe nila 2008). In addition, one case study video is being showcased on the SHPE National site and one on the SHPE Conference website. All videos can be seen at www.shpe.org/nila. AT&T’s $100 M Education Initiative In response to the alarming 1.2 million students that drop out of high school every year, more than half of whom are Hispanic, African-American and Native American children, AT&T recently announced its $100 million Aspire Initiative. The program is designed to help students see the connection between education and their future by means of three key elements. First, AT&T plans to provide grants to schools and nonprofit organizations that help students not only graduate from high school but also become better prepared for college and the work force. Second, a student job shadowing initiative involving 400,000 AT&T employee hours will be created to give about 100,000 students a firsthand look at the skills they will need to succeed in today’s workplace. The program also calls for the underwriting of national research that will explore the perspective of school officials on the high school dropout issue. Partnerships: The National Academy Foundation (NAF) recently announced its partnership with Kelly Engineering Resources to benefit its 13 Academies of Engineering (AOEs). Launching in the fall of 2008, the AOEs are a partnership with NAF, Project Lead the Way and the National Action Council for Minorities in Engineering (NACME). The partnership will ensure that high school students across the country receive the critical mentoring, internships and industry support they need to be exposed to careers in engineering. Through the partnership, Kelly Engineering Resources will support the AOEs with a monetary grant to enrich the educational experience of students by enabling educators to pursue new ideas, create innovative programs and fund special events to enhance the curriculum. It will also provide externships to NAF educators, enabling them to share current work practices and experience in the classroom. Happy Birthday, 4.0: This year the Guaranteed 4.0 Learning System, founded by Donna O. Johnson, celebrates its 20th anniversary. To mark the occasion, it released both high school and college DVDs which feature nearly four hours of seminar instruction organized in 10 chapters. This low-cost alternative to live seminars can be previewed at www.NoMoreStudy.com. Those who wish to know more about the DVD curriculum site license should contact the company at info@Guaranteed4.com. Guaranteed 4.0 also released the Quick Start guide, which is designed to give students a rapid exposure to the Guaranteed A+ PLUS, a high school learning skill program. It includes student worksheets, a parental guide (both in English and Spanish) and a one hour instructional DVD. Andrea Rocha Named SHPE/GEM Fellow Andrea M. Rocha has been recognized as the first SHPE/GEM Fellow to have her entire fellowship sponsored by the National GEM Consortium, rather than by an industry partner. Rocha is a candidate for a Ph.D. in engineering science (expected 2009) at the University of South Florida’s Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering. She received her M.S. in oceanography from Old Dominion University, Department of Ocean, Earth and Atmospheric Sciences, and a B.S. in biology from Texas A&M University, Corpus Christi. Currently, Rocha is a graduate research assistant at the University of South Florida, where she conducts sampling and data analysis using molecularbiology-based techniques to improve bioremediation efforts. Techniques include reverse transcription, fluorescent in situ hybridization (FISH) and RT-RiboSyn. She also helps to develop and conduct research and growth experiments on Shewanella, a bacterium capable of reducing metal compounds. Previously she participated in the Research Alliance in Math and Science Internship at Oak Ridge National Laboratory, Department of Energy, where she implemented and completed a research project comparing the metabolic pathways of various strains of Shewanella using metabolic modeling software. 12 SHPE ❘ Conference 2008 http://www.linkedin.com/e/gis/51672/1C621B1E2FD6 http://www.shpe.org/nila http://www.NoMoreStudy.com
