REGIONAL ROUNDUP REGION I Alaska ❚ California (Northern) ❚ Nevada (Northern) ❚ Oregon ❚ Washington South Central Valley Professional Chapter SHPE-SCV is optimistic about increasing its active membership. While few in number, our members are extremely active, responsible, dedicated and enthusiastic about promoting SHPE in our community. In October, we hosted Noche de Ciencas and a membership drive. With two local college campuses, we hope to promote STEM careers through professional panels, résumé review workshops and networking events. By attending the SHPE Conference as well as RLDC, we hope to extend SHPE’s benefits to all of our members. SHPE-SCV is excited to be a part of Region I and looks forward to networking with local student and professional chapters. Submitted by Maria Magdalena Reyes Professional Chapter President RSR Update Region I has a full schedule of events. In August we had our regional retreat, where we set goals and bonded as a region. Thanks to the generous sponsorship of Pacific Gas & Electric Company, the event was free to all members. The annual Bomba Cup soccer tournament was hosted by Sacramento State. In preparation for the SHPE Conference, we held Bomba Blast events throughout the region, where professional members helped student members through mock interviews and résumé critiques. With the donation of 1,000 free student memberships from The Clorox Company, we have the potential for exceptional growth. The College of the Sequoias has established a new chapter, bringing us to a total of 31 student chapters. Three teams from our region are participating in the Design Competition, and several members are competing in other events. Future events include a regional dance, graduate lab, sport fest and volleyball tournament. Everyone is invited to attend RLDC, which will be hosted by UC Merced from March 20-22. We look forward to what is on the horizon by thinking of ourselves not as a separate chapter but as part of a unified SHPE familia with common goals. Submitted by Harim Martinez Professional Chapter Vice President, K-12 Bakersfield College Sacramento Professional Chapter Our recently reactivated SHPESacramento successfully co-hosted RLDC last April. We have carried the momentum into the fall with new goals and priorities. Outreach to local schools tops the list, providing necessary links between students and professionals. Advancing these efforts between SHPE-Sacramento and the student chapters required creating a new position of outreach coordinator, which is held by Arianna Raymundo. Several events helped bridge the gap between student and professional chapters as well as among student chapters. September and October were spent “dividing and conquering” local events while preparing for the SHPE Conference. We presented workshops on “Teamwork in the Professional World” and résumé sessions for local college students. We also hosted a barbecue social for local chapters. We want our members to understand that our support extends far beyond our area’s boundaries and includes efforts to balance work and life while attending local chapter meetings and regional events. We look forward to meeting the new students with the ultimate goal of signing them as professional members upon graduation. Submitted By Davina Gonzalez Professional Chapter President Fresno Professional Chapter Sustaining membership in the Central Valley has always been a struggle, so we have worked hard to develop and maintain stronger communication and partnerships with other professional and student chapters. Over the summer, we helped Duncan Polytechnic High School start forming a SHPE Jr. chapter. Their first fundraising efforts were for a field trip to the Tech Museum of Innovation, which featured an exhibit on the innovative art, science and engineering works of Leonardo da Vinci and his Renaissance contemporaries and the their influence on modern technology. For this year’s SHPE Conference, we prowww.SHPE.org ❘ Conference 2008 SHPE-Bakersfield, also known as the Hispanic Organization Promoting Engineering and Science (HOPES), will focus on increasing membership by at least 50 percent, to 45 members. We also created a proposal to ask for support from local companies. In terms of high school outreach, we will promote higher education in engineering and science by creating a SHPE Jr. chapter, tutoring sessions, dynamic engineering presentations, competitions and much more. To help members reach their academic goals, HOPES also offers a blog through which students can ask questions at any time. With the 15 different projects that we have planned for this year, we believe that we can engineer a better future for our members and community. Submitted by David Herrera Student Chapter President Stanford University Every year, Stanford sponsors several alternative spring break trips, but they are rarely, if ever, focused on engineering and science. So last year, the Stanford Society of Chicano/Latino Engineers and Scientists (SSCLES) organized its first service and learning spring break trip. Eleven members traveled to Las Cruces, New Mexico, where they partnered with Dr. Robert Marquez of NMSU, a local mason and an architect from New York.
