PROGRAMS & SERVICES STEM Fun Offered at Summer Camps to spend a week at Cornell University during the summer at no cost to the students. AHETEMS provides the competitive airline travel vouchers to attend the summer program; Cornell University provides the tuition waiver. Applicants must have a minimum GPA of 3.5 and be entering their sophomore, junior or senior year in high school. Each year, AHETEMS awards scholarships for middle school students who are between the ages of 9 to 14 years old to attend a three-day Space Camp or six-day Space Academy, in Huntsville, Alabama, during the summer. This year’s winners were eighth graders Jose Martinez, of Maxwell Middle School (Tucson, Arizona), Anthony Reyna of Mount Paran Christian School (Marietta, Georgia) and Jesús Vega of Chaparral Middle School (Tucson, Arizona). All three attended the Space Academy. As part of the space track, they learned about the roles and responsibilities of Space Shuttle crew members, designed their space station in the computer lab and learned how to locate the International Space Station and other objects of interest in the night sky. During the aviation track, students learned the land and water survival tactics crucial to astronauts and pilots and got up close and personal with an F-14, F-16, T-38 and more as they learned the principles of flight. In the robotics track, students worked in teams to design and build a lunar robot to recover Apollo artifacts, deliver habitat modules and retrieve valuable Helium 3 pods from the lunar surface. Teams competed against each other as they practiced saving stranded astronauts and delivering supplies to the Space Station. After uncovering clues through Sudoku puzzles, Boulder high school students constructed boats and tested them at the SciTech Summer Camp at The University of Colorado. SHPE co-sponsored the camp. The SciTech Summer Camp is a fourday residential program intended to motivate, encourage and inform incoming 10th grade Hispanic high school students about the educational and career opportunities in math, science and engineering. Over the summer, the camps took place at the University of Colorado at Boulder, the University of Arizona and the University of Texas at Arlington. Each camp hosted 30 qualified Hispanic students who had a minimum 2.5 GPA and live within a 50mile area of the camp location. Summer camp participants lived in the university residence halls to fully experience the living-learning experience. They attended college prep and career workshops, toured the university’s engineering facilities and science labs, and participated in exciting hands-on engineering/science experiments and competitions. On the last day of the camp, parents attended workshops in Spanish or English, the awards luncheon and closing ceremony. Included in the activities at one camp were bridge-building and optics science challenges, an IBM facilities tour and a planetarium show. Students also attended workshops that ranged from competitive essay writing and typing to applying for the AHETEMS scholarship and financial aid. In addition to a math presentation, students also enjoyed presentations related to various STEM careers, a Sudoku scavenger hunt and Wright Flight Launch. Cornell Association for the Technological Advancement of Learned Youth in Science and Technology (CATALYST) program is a 32 one-week math, science and engineering summer residential program for rising high school sophomores, juniors and seniors from underrepresented backgrounds, especially African American, Latino or Native American. Participants were exposed to hands-on projects in engineering research fields and lab sessions led by engineering faculty. Academic and leadership skill development, panel discussions, social events and other out of classroom activities provided participants with opportunities to informally network with Cornell faculty, staff and students.
