PROGRAMS & SERVICES 2008-2009 ACE Mini-Grants The Advancing Careers in Engineering Mini-Grants Program invites SHPE student and professional chapters to submit funding proposals toward conducting educational activities with pre-college students in grades K12. This year, funding availability was expanded to the SHPE Jr. level with the Dallas SHPE Jr. being the first to benefit from an ACE minigrant. What follows are the chapters and the programs that received ACE funding for the 2008-2009 academic year. The awarded programs ranged from high school visitations and shadow days to design competitions and conferences, all with the goal of generating interested and enthusiasm for the technical sciences. In order to be considered for funding for the 2009-2010 academic year, proposals must be postmarked by April 15, 2009. During NILA 2008, professional and university SHPE chapters from across the country volunteered to host community outreach events that would put the spotlight on Hispanic contributions to engineering, math and science and encourage future Hispanic participation in those areas. Pre-college students engaged in activities relevant to their educational level. These included constructing and testing a Wright Flight Glider using Styrofoam® plates and a rubber band car. In addition, K-3 students completed activities in the inaugural issues of the AHETEMS Activity Book. The event also provided bilingual (English and Spanish) information about the college choice and admissions processes, financial aid, scholarships and resources that SHPE provides. AHETEMS provided participating chapters, which had volunteered during NILA 2008, with the necessary materials to conduct the hands-on activities and parent 34 presentations as well as other informative materials. What follows are the chapters that participated in this year’s event and the audience(s) to which the events were geared (elementary, middle school or high school students).
