Coming from humble beginnings in India, my parents instilled in me the spirit of giving back to the community. I have tried to live up to that expectation by supporting minority causes, such as the advancement of Hispanic-American professionals in the United States. It has been an honor to support SHPE’s mission since 1998. It is especially rewarding to be the first non-Hispanic to receive this award.’ Awards Speakers Professionals Competitions & Networking & Advisors eet Bindra’s story begins in central India. As a boy, he remembers watching military officers play tennis from the outside of an enclosed tennis court. He and his friends eagerly looked on, hoping that one of them would throw a ball their way. When they finally succeeded in capturing a ball, they used it to play soccer with their bare feet. Bindra dreamed of being on the other side of that fence. His parents encouraged him to study hard, and if he did well, then maybe one day his dreams would come true. In time, his personal quest for academic excellence earned him a scholarship to the Indian Institute of Technology in Kanpur, where he earned a bachelor’s degree with distinction in chemical engineering. When he accepted a research assistantship in chemical engineering at the University of Washington, he arrived in Seattle with $8 in his pocket. To pay back the loan to purchase the airline ticket, he worked as a cook at a local Indian restaurant. Not only did he go on to earn a M.S. in chemical engineering and an M.B.A., but he also climbed to the very top of the corporate ladder. Today Bindra is president of Chevron Global Manufacturing. In this role, he sets the long-term strategy and directs the overall operations of Chevron’s worldwide network of manufacturing facilities and a work force of 10,000 employees and contractors. During his 31-year career with Chevron, Bindra has had a multitude of challenging assignments. He has been involved in the day-to-day operation of complex manufacturing sites as well as in the planning and management of major capital projects for Chevron’s refining and chemicals business. As manager of strategic planning for the corporation, he helped set the company’s business direction. As president of Chevron Pipe Line Company, he was responsible for the transportation of oil and gas, petroleum products and chemicals throughout the United States. He also directed all the company’s worldwide pipeline projects. While Bindra viewed every assignment as an opportunity to learn and contribute, a career highlight occurred in 1995 as he led Chevron’s effort to negotiate the financing, design and construction J of pipeline from the Tengiz Field in Western Kazakhstan to the Black Sea. The complexity of the engineering aspect paled in comparison to securing and maintaining the cooperation of 11 oil companies from six sovereign countries, including Russia, the Republic of Kazakhstan and the Sultanate of Oman. As a result of his successful negotiations, they constructed a $2.5 billion, 1,500 kilometer pipeline capable of carrying up to 1.5 million barrels of crude oil a day. Today that pipeline helps supply the world’s increasing demand for energy. The experience reminded Bindra “that diverse ideas and approaches can achieve seemingly impossible things when they are driven by the unifying force of a common dream.” Through word and action, he demonstrates his commitment to building a stronger, better world through diversity. Another career highlight has been his involvement with Chevron’s Hispanic Recruiting team, which he has mentored since 1998. The SHPE lifetime member has twice served as keynote speaker at the SHPE Conference (1998 and 2006) and has addressed the student chapters at University of Nevada, Reno, and University of California, Santa Barbara. Carlos Aguilera, Vice President of Business Development, Chevron Africa and Latin America E&P Co. and co-executive sponsor of Chevron’s Hispanic Recruiting Team, explained what makes Bindra a sought after speaker: “The stories he tells of his own experiences inspire others to keep their ethnic pride and values alive as they pursue their dreams.” “Jeet is deeply committed to developing career and personal growth opportunities for talented minorities and women,” said Dr. Olivia Graeve, past SHPE-UNR advisor. “He understands the challenges that minorities face because he has seen and overcome them himself. He now shares his time and wisdom freely with the young people starting out on their own career paths.” Next to spending time with his family, Bindra’s greatest enjoyment comes from opportunities to interact with diverse people – listening to them, mentoring them and encouraging them to build on their dreams – especially because they remind him so much of a certain young man he once knew in India.
