This prestigious award speaks to the success of that partnership, and IBM looks forward to working with SHPE and other companies as we take our community to the next level.’ Adalio Sanchez, General Manager, Modular Systems, IBM Systems & Technology Group Professionals Speakers & Advisors & Networking Awards or the fourth time in five years, IBM is the recipient of Company of the Year Award of the Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers (SHPE). This year’s award once again emphasizes IBM’s commitment to advance the Society’s mission and vision through strategic initiatives. In May, IBM, in collaboration with ExxonMobil, Lockheed Martin and Univision, hosted a two-day summit: America’s Competitiveness: Hispanic Participation in Technology Careers, at the IBM Executive Conference Center in Palisades, New York. The goal of the summit was to develop an aggressive action plan and timeline to address the critical shortage of job candidates in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) and, in particular, the low participation from the Hispanic community. Members of the SHPE Executive Board also participated in the summit. IBM’s top Hispanic leaders expanded the Cascade Mentoring Program to locations in New York; Washington, D.C.; Texas; Denver; California; North Carolina; and Florida, exceeding the program’s own expectations. This online program, which IBM Tucson initiated, partners high school students with IBM employees and SHPE university students for a three-way mentorship experience. The IBM/SHPE National Mentoring Program (NTMP) teams approximately 50 IBM Hispanic leaders with 50 of SHPE’s top university students across the United States. The online mentoring continues to focus on developing candidates, providing a strong value proposition and differentiating top university talent. NTMP was expanded to include HENAAC and NSHMBA university student participation. IBM continues its support of the SCI-TECH 2020 Camps with SHPE and HENAAC. These first-of-a-kind camps create educational opportunities for Hispanic tenth and eleventh grade high school students to develop STEM skills while supporting the community and building a talent pipeline. The four-day, three-night camps include hands-on activities and workshops on financial aid, college applications, essay preparations and STEM careers. SCI-TECH summer camps were held in Arizona, Colorado, California and Texas. IBM employees in the Arizona and Colorado locations F provided tours of the IBM site, IBM panels and workshops as well as keynote speakers. IBM hosts several podcasts that focus on professional skills development and makes these podcasts available on the OneSHPE website. IBM podcasts posted at OneSHPE include: • How to Talk to Your Manager & Make it Happen (IBM/SHPE) • Work/Life Balance - (IBM/SHPE) • Technology Outlook – IBM • Building a Championship Team – IBM • Derailment Factors – IBM • Believe In Yourself - IBM • IBM plans more podcasts before the end of this year. For the eighth consecutive year, IBM served as industry host to the SHPE National Board of Directors retreat. In addition to providing meeting facilities on IBM property and sponsoring meals, IBM executives and IBM employees moderated and participated in the strategic planning sessions. IBM continues to be a key sponsor for the seven Regional Leadership Development Conferences (RLDCs). IBM volunteers work actively, providing workshops, panels and keynote speakers to the RLDCs to ensure their success. IBM volunteers assist with the development and update of the various OneSHPE applications in use today. IBM sponsored an IBM marketing consultant and an information architect to perform a thorough evaluation of shpe.org and the OneSHPE Portal, which resulted in very useful feedback to the SHPE organization. In 2006 and 2007, IBM provided $10,000 in computer hardware grants to assist in revamping SHPE’s website and infrastructure. These grants were used to continue the development of SHPE’s IT infrastructure and in creating OneSHPE. These efforts significantly increased productivity and reduced training cycle time. IBM continues to rank among the top five employers on the SHPE survey to determine the top companies for Latinos in the technology industry. Among the findings of the more than1,500 members polled, the survey shows that IBM continues to be selected by a majority of members as the preferred employer based on the company’s opportunities for upward mobility, benefits and salary.
