However, we have only gone halfway if we stop once student members land their first job out of school. Now more than ever, that first job is not the end product of hard work and dedication – it is simply the first step in a new journey. Just as we educate and inspire students to become engineers, we must continue to train, motivate and empower current engineers. As a culture, as an industry, as a country – we, as professionals, do not have the luxury of maintaining the status quo. As an engineer, you compete with your co-workers, the younger generation of engineers coming up behind you and even engineers in other countries who can work for a mere fraction of your salary. The world is becoming smaller and opportunities abound, especially for those who have been denied opportunities throughout history. So where does that leave us, specifically Hispanic engineers in the United States? Because SHPE is the Source for Quality Hispanic Engineers and Technical Talent, professionals can look to it in their personal quest for constant improvement. SHPE will be providing new technical programs designed to ensure that professionals stay ahead of the curve. You may also take advantage of SHPE programs that develop the unique strengths that American engineers offer the world — creativity, innovation and leadership. These programs include our Professional Development Strategy (PDS) Series, Management Growth Training (MGT) and Executive LeaderSHPE Institute (ELI). Also, don’t miss the chance to participate in our new professional offerings during the SHPE Conference. We cannot allow these opportunities to pass us by. The more we hear about globalization and outsourcing, the more we also hear about American complacency and sense of entitlement. These do not accurately describe Hispanic engineers. While some of our colleagues bemoan the economic future, we are honing skills, talents and marketable traits that will enable us to reach for and attain success in the global marketplace. Today, wealth is a fluid entity, changing hands rapidly throughout our country and around the world. Hispanic engineers can either take advantage of the amazing opportunities that stem from some of today’s challenges and play a vital role in our changing industry and economy or serve as mere foot soldiers trudging through the vastly changing landscape. Let’s live up to our mission to be quality Hispanic engineers and technical talent. Let’s continue to learn, adapt and improve throughout our careers. Let’s become industry leaders that make the big decisions and positively change the course of the future. I hope you will join me in this quest for success, not only to support those on the first rung of that ladder, but also to empower those who are already on their way up.
