SHPE - Fall 2007 - (Page 10) LeaderSHPE 2007-2008 National Board Kathleen Gonzales S Region I Vice President ifetime member Kathleen Gonzales is the new Region I vice president. Her SHPE involvement began at California State University, Fresno, where she served as secretary, vice president and regional leadership conference chairwoman. The following years she was elected to the positions of Region I student representative and then vice national student representative. As a new professional, she helped establish the South Central Valley SHPE Professional Chapter in California. Over the years, her participation on the organizing committees for various national and western regional conferences as well as co-chairwoman for the National Student Affairs Committee has granted her a vast knowledge of the organization. “As a young professional, I believe I can understand the needs of the professionals while still appreciating the needs of the students,” Gonzales explained. In this new role, she plans to balance the two needs in order to promote professional activities, bolster new and struggling chapters, improve communication among chapters and, ultimately, make the region stronger. L Ricardo Carlos S Region II Vice President software engineer with IBM, Ricardo Carlos is now in the second year of his term as Region II vice president. As regional vice president, Carlos has focused his attention on strengthening community outreach programs by sharing best practices among chapters and educating chapter leadership on available resources including AHETEMS. During the latter part of his tenure, he’ll continue working to establish partnerships with key Hispanic organizations and businesses to help promote SHPE’s mission. Most significantly, Carlos is committed to strengthening the bond between professional and student members and increasing the number of graduates who continue as SHPE professionals. As a result, he recently served as chairman for the Membership Value Proposition (MVP) Project, working with SHPE’s marketing office in developing strategies to recruit and retain members at all levels of the organization and promote SHPE’s mission to increase its visibility among corporate sponsors and the Hispanic community. A S Region III Vice President egion III veteran Ismael Mendoza returns for a second term as regional vice president. The SHPE lifetime member is currently employed with Colorado Electronic Product Design. In the past, Mendoza has served as an advisor for the region’s fledging chapters and champion for SHPE’s national conference in 2006 and 2007. He also collaborated with IBM to spearhead events related to Metro Denver’s La Familia Technology Week. Mendoza joined SHPE as a student at the Colorado School of Mines, where he served as student chapter president and Region III student representative. During this term in office, he will continue his endeavors to form professional chapters throughout the region as well as strengthen the communication between student and professional chapters. Ismael Mendoza R Iliana Limon S Region IV Vice President liana Limon, a civil and architectural engineer with INTECH Construction Inc., is currently in the second half of her tenure as Region IV vice president, a position she has held for more than three years. The former Greater Philadelphia SHPE Professional Chapter president has also served as student curriculum chairwoman for the national conference and the National Institute for Leadership Advancement as well as on various committees for the eastern regioal conference. Strengthening the Regional Council to improve communication between professional and student chapters continues to top her list of priorities, which also includes improving professional programs, increasing membership and expanding outreach activities. I Michael E. Gutierrez S Region V Vice President e-elected for a second term as Region V vice president is Michael Gutierrez, a Weapon Delivery Analysis Embedded Software Engineer Staff for the Lockheed Martin F-35 Lightning 2 program. The SHPE lifetime member also served as the founding president of the SHPE-Lockheed Martin Aeronautics Fort Worth Professional Chapter from 2003 through 2006. In Gutierrez’s first year as regional vice president, Region V established the vision to become the “Center of Professionalism.” He also focused on listening to and addressing the concerns of the members and has added value to help establish Region V as the region with the second largest professional membership. During his tenure, he will continue to build the new regional leadership structure, promote collaboration and communication among chapters and increase membership across the region.
