SHPE - Fall 2007 - (Page 21) SHPE for Dummies The final product of last year’s winning case study was unveiled at NILA 2007: “SHPE for Dummies.” The manual compiles the time-tested best practices of SHPE’s most successful chapters. According to Antonina Robles, past NSR who directed the effort, while one group of leaders may be very successful, when they graduate, the information doesn’t always transition to the less experienced officers who take over. As a result, the chapter struggles and often becomes inactive. “We wanted to create the means for outgoing leaders to provide incoming leaders with the tools they need to be successful,” she said. All members soon will have access to the manual via OneSHPE. SHPE for Dummies is divided into seven sections to address the following subjects: Section 1 provides a history of SHPE and its regions, an explanation of acronyms and OneSHPE as well as the roles/responsibilities/contact information for the National Board of Directors, student representatives and staff. Section 2 covers recruitment and retention of members, national deadlines and dues. Section 3 covers core programs such as Advancing Careers in Engineering, SHPE Weeks, GPA Rewards and Regional Leadership Development Conferences. Section 4 provides helpful information on fundraising, including corporate sponsorship and activities. Section 5 is all about leadership transition and provides information on the officer retreat, training, effective meetings and goal setting. Section 6 focuses on chapter management, including the roles and responsibilities of each board member, team building and timelines. Section 7 centers on chapter culture such as professional behavior, ethics and integrity.
