Dr. Alderete’s research on the number one, non-viral sexually transmitted agent, Trichomonas vaginalis, has resulted in six patents and patents pending. He has more than 117 publications in peer-review journals and 54 book chapters and invited op-ed editorials. AHETEMS Pre-College Symposia The AHETEMS Pre-College Symposia is a two-and-a-half day college and career awareness program for Hispanic middle and high school students. Two tracks, a High School Track and a Middle School Track, are held for approximately 800 Hispanic students from the local community, out-of-state areas and SHPE Jr. chapters. High school students attend workshops on college financial aid, SAT/ACT test prep, college choice, college admissions and careers in science and engineering. They also get to meet with representatives from more than 30 colleges, universities and scholarship programs at the college fair. Other events include the Welcome Dinner hosted by the Department of Defense, a corporate or university tour and the college/career fair. Middle school students participate in hands-on science, technology, engineering and math activities hosted by various corporate representatives and engineering college students. Invited keynote speaker for the Pre-College Symposia includes Jaime Escalante (“Stand and Deliver”). Advisor Roundtable The Advisor Roundtable is an opportunity for new and experienced advisors to network and develop action plans to improve programs and services for SHPE student chapters across the nation. Corporate Tours Prestigious corporations will open their doors to SHPE students. By visiting company sites and touring state-of-the-art facilities, students will gain a unique view into the corporate world, one which will give them perspective when making career decisions. Gala Banquet This event will provide opportunities to network in an elegant and social setting. As SHPE’s current leaders introduce themselves, they will present awards that recognize the achievements and dedication of SHPE’s members, friends and colleagues. Entertainment From a Halloween Costume Party on Wednesday to an adrenaline-packed indoor challenge on Thursday and various other presentations, the SHPE Conference will feature social activities to make the event all the more memorable. Professional and Student Chapter Awards Based on the End of Year Reports, the National Affairs Committee Awards are the highest and most prestigious awards SHPE National presents to professional and student chapters. Professional chapters are awarded for their local contributions in education, community outreach, organizational development and professional development. Student chapters are recognized under the categories of Most Improved Chapter, Chapter Development, Professional Development, Leadership Development, Academic Development and Outreach and Community Service. Awards are presented to one professional and one student chapter per region, from which one professional and three student chapters are selected as national winners. COMPETITIONS National Academic Olympiad Student chapter teams from each of the seven regions test their engineering and technical knowledge in this “Jeopardy”style competition. Technical Paper and Poster Competitions These competitions highlight the research achievements of SHPE students by allowing them to present their research work in a public forum. SHPE invites graduate and undergraduate students who are paid SHPE members to submit their work, so long as the topic is related to the technical fields of engineering and science. A panel of professionals will judge each entry on its relevance to broader society; originality of work, inclusion of new concepts, innovations or data; technical content; written presentation and clarity; and thoroughness of research and work presented in the abstract.
