Two years ago, we adopted a new mission statement, a commitment to be The Source for Quality Hispanic Engineers and Technical Talent. This illustrates our goal to become an even greater organization, enhancing services for all of our members – both student and professional. Some would be satisfied to say that once our students graduate and find jobs, SHPE has completed its mission. The unseen obstacle is a little-known fact – that when it comes to the executive ranks, corporate America has not kept up with the growth of the Hispanic community. The figures that show Hispanics as the largest minority group in the country with 13 percent of the population only illustrate part of the story. According to the Hispanic Association on Corporate Responsibility (HACR), a Washington, D.C.-based organization dedicated to “the inclusion of Hispanics in corporate America,” Hispanics hold only 191 of 10,417 (or 1.8 percent) board seats at Fortune 1,000 corporations, and less than 1.1 percent of Hispanic professionals hold executive positions. This statistic should concern every member of SHPE. Yes, it is vital that we encourage Hispanic students to study and obtain engineering degrees, and each student can expect to secure a good job. Yet if our mission were complete at that point, we simply would be generating a new class of entry-level technological workers. Are we training our students to become effective engineers who will not likely advance to executive level responsibility? Is that what we really want for our community? Someone must train these engineers to become executives, and no other organization in America today understands Hispanic engineers better than SHPE. We have taken the initial steps to remedy this situation by introducing our Professional Development Strategy; but, like all endeavors, we must give it proper time and support if our effort is to take root. When SHPE started more than 30 years ago, we did not see results immediately. Results take time to realize. The current situation in corporate America will not be reversed overnight. We need to stay the course and press forward, knowing that we are doing the right thing for our members, our community and America. As The Source, SHPE achieves its mission not only when there is an increase in the number of Hispanic engineers on the job, but also a significant increase in the number of Hispanic engineers holding leadership positions in the United States.
