SHPE - Fall 2007 - (Page 64) I P C U P D AT E ¿Qué Dice la Gente? Membership Survey Names Kimberly-Clark 2007 Employer of the Year T he Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers is proud to announce the results of its third annual employer preference survey. This year, the Kimberly-Clark Corporation was selected as the vice presidents from IBM were strongly represented at past SHPE conferences. Each year the IPC uses this information to more effectively recruit SHPE’s top talent. According to Martinez, this year’s survey revealed that career advancement opportunities and having a work/life balance are very important to students. “So when recruiters come to SHPE’s career fair,” she said, “they should be prepared to answer questions about the career advancement opportunities their companies offer and the process involved.” Once again, the Society turned to www.zoomerang.com in reaching 3,000 member participants. Furthermore, many questions were modeled after those asked by an annual survey issued by the National Society of Black Engineers (NSBE). Students comprised approximately 43 percent of respondents, with professionals composing the remaining 57 percent. The vast majority of respondents were engineering majors, with significant representation from the electrical, mechanical and industrial engineering disciplines. This year’s winner, Kimberly-Clark, is a leading global health and hygiene company employing more than 55,000 people worldwide and posting sales of $16.7 billion in 2006. The 135-year-old company is headquartered in Dallas, Texas, and has operations in 37 countries. Kimberly-Clark’s brands, such as Kleenex, Scott, Huggies, Pull-Ups, Kotex, Poise and Depends, are sold in more than 150 countries, where the company holds either the No. 1 or No. 2 share position in more than half of those countries. Diversity is a critical component of Kimberly-Clark’s long-term success. It is valued for its role in inspiring innovation, enhancing consumer and investor “Best Company to Work For” by students and professional members. In determining the top companies for Hispanics in the technology industry, members were asked questions regarding the more than 50 companies on SHPE’s Industrial PartnerSHPE Council (IPC) and other sponsoring companies that provide additional support and in-kind services to the Society. This year’s survey differed in that it measured the members’ perceptions in three categories: growing opportunities and upward mobility for Latinos; best recruitment practices and SHPE involvement; and co-op/internship opportunities. “In the past, we’ve always asked about upward mobility, best recruitment practices and SHPE involvement,” said Maritza Martinez, chairwoman of the annual survey. “We hadn’t asked with which companies they had done co-ops and internships. We included the question this year to see how much influence internships and co-ops had on student and professional voting.” In 2005 and 2006, members overwhelmingly selected IBM and Intel, respectively, as winners across all categories. This year, Kimberly-Clark was the overall winner, but different leaders were selected in the other categories. (See side bar for results.) This year’s results were more complex because there were a greater number of participating companies and many tied for a rank. Also, the survey gave a good overview of member perception. “When you look at the trend, you expect Kimberly-Clark, IBM, Intel and Verizon to be on top because most students participated in internships with those companies, so you expect that to influence their voting,” Martinez explained. “But for upward mobility, they voted IBM number one and P&G number two, even though it didn’t rank for internships among respondents.” Martinez pointed to the fact that Hispanic 64 confidence and attracting and retaining the best talent. “K-C is honored to be chosen by SHPE as its 2007 Employer of the Year,” said Lesley Hoare, vice president of Talent Management & Diversity and Inclusion. “As a global company, we are committed to partnering with such professional organizations like SHPE as we continue cultivating a fair, respectful and engaging work environment that inspires our diverse global team to thrive professionally. We believe in promoting a culture that values and capitalizes on individual and collective talents. Diverse opinions, perspectives and ideas make K-C a more innovative organization.” Category Results Best Company to Work For 1 Kimberly-Clark Corporation 2 IBM Corporation The Boeing Company 3 Texas Instruments With which company did you participate in an internship or co-op? 1 Kimberly-Clark Corporation IBM Corporation 2 Ford Motor Company Intel Corporation Texas Instruments Verizon Communications Best Organizations for Recruitment Practices and SHPE Involvement 1 Kimberly-Clark Corporation 2 IBM Corporation 3 The Boeing Company Organizations Best Known for Providing Growing Opportunities for Latinos and Upward Mobility 1 IBM Corporation 2 Procter & Gamble 3 Kimberly-Clark Corporation Texas Instruments Verizon Communications SHPE R Fall 2007 http://www.zoomerang.com
