Made of odds and ends, the students’ vehicles were judged on how far they traveled. in teams to build towers that were then load tested to see which one held the most weight. Hourly prizes were awarded to the strongest “Towers of the Future,” one of which stood tall and firm with a maximum weight of 5.5 lbs. All the participants witnessed engineering theory immediately put into practice. Next year’s event will take place on February 16, 2008, at the National Building Museum. In support of E-Week, SHPE-CT along with the Society of Women Engineers (SWE) and the National Society of Black Engineers (NSBE) hosted an event for the SHPE Jr. Chapter at Hartford Public High School and students from three other local high schools. The 25 students were put into teams and participated in two main activities. In Project X, teams had less than 90 minutes to construct an engineless vehicle from balloons, rubber bands, Styrofoam and paper clips. A panel of volunteers and teachers awarded points based on the distance the vehicles traveled, their design, the teams’ creativity and the materials they used. Each member of the winning team received a $25 Barnes & Noble gift card. During the second activity, students participated in a scavenger bingo hunt. The three participating organizations created information boards that detailed the accomplishments of engineers and/or scientists that were women, African American and Hispanic. Using a sheet that listed the names and accomplishments of engineers, the students had to search the information boards for the applicable accomplishment or individual. The first person to call “bingo” and have their answers verified received a Barnes & Noble gift card. Based on the degree to which students from different schools worked together to complete the projects, the innovative and creative designs proposed by each team, and the strong participation of volunteers from SHPE-CT and the SHPE Jr. chapter, the event was an unequivocal success.
