SHPE - Fall 2007 - (Page 73) ty. In the works are projects such as revamping our high school programs to better serve students. In addition, we are also looking forward to Catch a Special Thrill (CAST), which will allow disadvantaged children to experience fishing and the outdoors. Our silver anniversary reminds us of the close bonds we share, and we look forward to the next 25 years. Each individual offers their unique approaches to problem solving and development, coming together to form an effective and efficient team that leads the way in technological advancement. We believe that strong people make a strong company, and that different points of view lead to greater understanding and achievement. Teledyne Scientific & Imaging is an Equal Opportunity Employer M/F/D/V Stanford University The past year was full of new and exciting projects for the Stanford Society of Chicano/Latino Engineers and Scientists (SSCLES). SSCLES began the year with several SHPE members at Stanford tutor middle school kids on Newton’s laws. goals, two of which were to increase our community service projects and to become more involved with the broader Latino community on campus. In order to do this, SSCLES, in partnership with Barrio Assistance Bridge, a tutoring program housed under Stanford’s Latino-focused community center, started a new initiative known as Science Buddies. Every quarter, SSCLES members lead science experiments for the middle school students in the program. Recently, the kids learned Newton’s laws and how to analyze objects in motion versus objects at rest. SSCLES hopes to continue its relationship with Barrio Assistance by adding an elementary school component to Science Buddies. Members also created workshops for Raza Day, an annual high school conference hosted by our campus’ Movimiento Estudiantil Chicano de Aztlán (MEChA) chapter. We are excited for a new year that will hopefully involve the expansion of our programs as well as their continued success. Some members arrived early to prepare the food. Families, including parents, siblings, grandparents, uncles, aunts, cousins and friends, traveled up to two hours to spend the afternoon with us. One family traveled more than three hours and brought the family’s signature salsa! While the steaks sizzled on the grill, a cascarita with the soccer ball began. Others chatted about final exams and the usual things on the minds of college students. We were joined by Ron Adams, dean of the College of Engineering, who has attended several of our organization’s weekly meetings and demonstrated great interest in our future projects. SHPE-OSU’s incoming president, Oman Meza, introduced the newly elected officers and advisor, Mario A. Magaña, and then exclaimed, “¡Buen provecho!” The feast began. As the evening dwindled and families began to head home, several parents mentioned that we should hold a quarterly barbecue in addition to the annual event. “Don’t worry about Oregon weather,” they said, “we can make tamales, pozole and mole instead of carne asada.” Submitted by Laura Cristal Magaña Student Chapter Secretary REGION II Arizona T California (Southern) T Hawaii T Nevada (Southern) From the RVP This past year, we embarked on important new initiatives such as the Unified Region II E-Week program to have a wider reach in the Hispanic www.SHPE.org R Fall 2007 73 http://www.teledyne-si.com http://www.teledyne-si.com http://www.wnec.edu/engineering/deansearch http://www.wnec.edu/engineering/deansearch http://www.SHPE.org
