Gomez S National President n more than 20 years of involvement with the Society, SHPE lifetime member Diana Gomez has served more than 11 years on the board of directors, the last four as national president. During this time, the chief of the Office of Traffic Management and a senior electrical engineer with Caltrans has led initiatives that have more than doubled SHPE’s scholarship program, professional development services, internships and corporate partnerships. Considering her election to an unprecedented third term as a mandate, Gomez said, “While we have been extremely successful in the last four years, I am confident that we are on a high-speed momentum that will only produce greater success in the near future.” As a result, she will continue to foster cooperative and constructive relationships with all SHPE’s customers and develop plans to increase student and professional chapters across the nation. In addition to increasing SHPE’s scholarship program, she will also strive to grow learning center programs for professional members at all levels and implement academic programs to improve the achievement of college and K-12 students. Toward improving customer service, Gomez will work to enhance programs to make an even greater impact in the Hispanic community. I Manuel Hernandez S National Vice President urrently employed as a senior principal systems engineer, IPT lead and Six Sigma specialist with Raytheon, Manuel Hernandez is the longest tenured officer on the national board. During his past two terms as vice president, this SHPE lifetime member and champion of professional development launched three programs to provide members with a continuum of training that spans from the entry and managerial levels right through to the executive. Improving the value of professional membership has doubled offerings at the national conference and, according to Hernandez, will go a long way in providing members with the skills needed to close the “Executive Gap” for Hispanics in corporate America today. Also, he’s played a critical role in the restructuring and growth of the SHPE Conference. During this unprecedented third term, he is committed to enhancing and expanding the reach of these programs; guiding the Society’s restructuring to maximize benefits to all members; and increasing the value, effectiveness, efficiency and consistency of SHPE’s various other programs. “Working together, we can build the next generation of excellence in engineering, both for SHPE and our country,” Hernandez said. C Dora Maria Abreu S National Secretary n the second part of her third term as national secretary is Dora Maria Abreu, a SHPE lifetime member employed as a technology analyst at Goldman Sachs. Her involvement in SHPE began as an undergraduate student, grew during graduate school and continues strong today as a professional member. Abreu received national acclaim last summer when she was named among the “100 Most Important Hispanics in Technology and Business” by Hispanic Engineer & Information Technology magazine. As she fulfills her role in archiving and maintaining SHPE’s information, she will ensure that SHPE fully uses the OneSHPE platform to achieve uniformity, maintain open lines of communication and make all the Society’s documentation readily available to members far and wide. By keeping members informed nationwide, Abreu hopes to see an increase in participation and support to membership, especially among K-12 community service activities. She would also like to see stronger collaboration among college-level and professional membership and partners. I Annette Jimenez S National Treasurer ifetime member Annette Jimenez is currently completing the later half of her third term as the Society’s treasurer. Jimenez spent a 23-year career at the Internal Revenue Service, and she has continuously contributed to SHPE’s sustained growth and progress with regard to its financial stability, credibility, integrity and accountability. During her last term, she successfully obtained 501c tax exemption for the AHETEMS Foundation, which expands SHPE’s educational programs. In her first term she developed the first set of financial policies, and now she’s developing a financial operations handbook. In addition to ensuring that tax reporting is timely and correctly filed, she recently secured via appeal process $54,000 in IRS refunds which were incorrectly filed past payments prior to her first term. For her dedicated efforts she received a President’s Award in 2003 and the eastern regional conference’s Lifetime Achievement Award in 2004. Her current goals are to increase SHPE’s financial and organizational effectiveness to expand its impact on the Hispanic community. L 8 SHPE R Fall 2007
