SHPE - Fall 2008 - (Page 10) LEADERSHPE Dora Maria Abreu ❙ Region IV Vice President ransitioning into the role of regional vice president is Dora Maria Abreu, a SHPE lifetime member employed as an AVP senior business analyst with Pershing LLC. Most recently completing three terms as national secretary, she worked to ensure that the OneSHPE platform was used to achieve uniformity, maintain open lines of communication and make all the Society’s documentation readily available to members far and wide. Abreu’s NBOD experience contributes to more than 20 years as a student and professional leader and volunteer extraordinaire for regional and national conference committees. Her consistent and proactive approach has also been felt locally as she mentors university and K-12 students. “As a region, we need to build our leadership and its pipeline,” Abreu said. “We need to leverage our relationships to ensure that Region IV, and in SHPE Inc., maintains its status as the number one organization for STEM in the Northeast and nationwide.” T Technical Poster and Paper Competitions. Since 1997, she has served as a founding member and vice president of professional development for the North Carolina SHPE Professional Chapter as well as vice president and recording secretary for the Greater Philadelphia SHPE Professional Chapter. She also held various positions on the board of the SHPE chapter at North Carolina State University, where she earned a Ph.D. in chemical engineering. Dr. Jimenez’s tenure goals include building a stronger region through collaboration and communication as well as pioneering programs that can be replicated in other regions. Enrique Arce-Larreta ❙ National Graduate Rep. nrique Arce-Larreta is in his third year of a Ph.D. in mechanical engineering at the University of Utah, from where he also earned bachelor’s degrees in mechanical engineering and political science. His SHPE involvement began in 1999 when he served two terms as vice president of the student chapter before becoming president last year. As president, he more than doubled the membership, had the chapter officially reinstated and led several officers to participate in RLDC for the first time in nearly 10 years. He has also begun collaborating with his alma mater West High School in establishing the region’s second SHPE Jr. chapter. “I am dedicated to encouraging and promoting the needs of Hispanic graduate students through service and advocacy,” he said. E Michael E. Gutierrez ❙ Region V Vice President ompleting his second term as Region V vice president is Michael Gutierrez, a Weapon Delivery Analysis Embedded Software Engineer Staff for the Lockheed Martin F-35 Lightning 2 program. The SHPE lifetime member also served as the founding president of the SHPE-Lockheed Martin Aeronautics Fort Worth Professional Chapter from 2003 through 2006. During Gutierrez’s first term as vice president, the region established the vision to become the “Center of Professionalism, which has contributed to Region V having the second largest pro” fessional membership in the nation. During his current tenure, he will continue building the region’s leadership structure, promoting collaboration among chapters and increasing membership. Gutierrez is also piloting a new leadership program to expand professional developmental tools that will help SHPE members be the source for the best technical talent. In time, he hopes that the signature program reaches all Region V professionals, and eventually professionals in other regions. C Alejandra Hernandez ❙ National Undergraduate Rep. lejandra Hernandez, an industrial and systems engineering senior at the University of Florida, began her SHPE involvement as secretary and later president of the student chapter. As a 2006 NILA participant, her winning case study team conceptualized the “SHPE for Dummies Manual,” and as project manager, she helped complete it for distribution the following year. Last year, Hernandez served as the vice regional student representative for the Central Florida sub region and received a President’s Award for her leadership and dedication. Her NUR goals include STEM outreach for middle and high school students through engineering summer camps and E-Week activities. Hernandez also seeks to empower SHPE members to become ambassadors who promote STEM education among K-12 students, thereby developing a stronger pipeline for engineering talent. A Adriana S. Ocampo ❙ Region VI Vice President driana Ocampo was re-elected to a second term as Region VI vice president. As a supplier program manager for the Manned Ground Vehicles Program in Future Combat Systems (FCS) at Boeing, she is responsible for establishing a supplier management plan to guarantee that best practices are followed. In 2006, she was selected to the Boeing Leadership Experiences Program, a three-year initiative toward ensuring that the company maintains operational effectiveness by cultivating its next generation of leaders. Ocampo joined SHPE in 2005 as a co-founder of the St. Louis Gateway SHPE Professional Chapter, for which she served two terms as treasurer. As regional vice president, she supported the initiation of the Indiana and Kentucky Professional Chapters and the University of Dayton Student Chapter. Also, her close relationship with Global Diversity at Anheuser-Busch was instrumental to it joining the Industrial PartnerSHPE Council in 2007. Ocampo’s current goals include helping establish professional chapters in Central Illinois and Wisconsin. A Francisco Rivera ❙ Vice National Undergraduate Rep. n industrial engineering senior at the University of Puerto Rico, Mayagüez, Francisco Rivera most recently completed a term as Region IV student representative. During this time, he increased regional membership, helped initiate a SHPE Jr. chapter in Puerto Rico, helped form a new student chapter and reactivated four others. Previously, Rivera served as editor in chief of UPRM’s chapter newsletter, vice president of internal affairs and finance chairman for the 2007 Regional Leadership Development Conference held in Puerto Rico. His leadership was instrumental to the chapter’s 62 percent increase in membership and winning the Most Improved Chapter Award and the Community Outreach Award. As VNUR, Rivera will continue to focus on improving communication as well as other needs expressed by the NBOD and the SHPE student body. ■ A Dr. Concepción Jiménez-Gonzáles ❙ Region VII Vice President D 10 r. Conchita Jimenez, director of New Product Support in the Corporate Environment, Health and Safety department at GlaxoSmithKline, is currently completing her second term as Region VII vice president. In this position, the SHPE lifetime member helped the region pilot two programs with IBM which have since been instituted nationally. She has also judged SHPE’s SHPE ❘ Fall 2008
