C O V E R S T O RY ❚ Photography by Chris Callaway, USA Photography Chapter Leaders Learn to Spread ‘SHPE Fever’ By Leilani Rangel The Great ‘08 meaning of passion, pride, respect and leadership. “Have the passion and the pride to step up to servant leadership,” he said. “If you truly have passion and pride for something, it’s impossible for you to leave it the same way that you found it.” Mack challenged each SHPE member to channel his or her pride and passion into recruiting one more member. “Create an army, not just in numbers, but in the spirit of the alchemist to reclaim our children and turn them into gold.” In addressing professional members, motivational keynote speaker Dr. Calvin Mackie pointed to the engineering failures that crippled the nation during Hurricane Katrina. Considering that an earthquake, wildfire, drought or bridge collapse can cause similar devastation, no one is W ell known for its grueling schedule and demands, the National Institute for Leadership Advancement (NILA) supplied SHPE’s chapter officers with the skills to meet member needs during four days of intensive training and high-energy teamwork as well as a tremendous immune. “Will our nation be prepared?” he asked. “What role did we have in not being prepared?” Mackie encouraged professionals to take immediate action to fill the engineering pipeline. Much like viruses, attitudes are also contagious, so the new officers were challenged to spread SHPE fever to their local chapters. “When you ask your members, ‘Who is a SHPE leader?’ all hands should go up,” said Conchita Jimenez, Region VII vice president. “You don’t have to be an officer to be a leader. Your behavior and all you do should exhibit leadership. Real leaders can inspire other leaders.” All NILA participants tested positive – determined to increase the number of Hispanics graduating high school and completing college STEM degrees. Workshops Encourage Peer Mentoring Whether the topic was time management, recruitment, fundraising or corporate relations, workshops were forums to share knowledge transfer from the National Board and committees. Held in August at the American Airlines Training and Conference Center in Fort Worth, Texas, NILA attracted a record attendance of 179 student and 48 professional members representing 129 and 38 chapters, respectively. SHPE CEO Enrique Gomez reminded students of the value of NILA’s training. “You will never experience something like this again as a student,” he said. “You’ll be stretched to your maximum limit. Only then can you really know your capabilities. When you leave, you won’t doubt whether or not you are a leader.” NILA’s dominant tone was set by motivational keynote speaker Carl Mack, executive director for the National Society of Black Engineers (NSBE), who redefined the Passion, pride and professionalism were at the heart of NILA’s leadership training.
