SHPE - Fall 2008 - (Page 16) C O V E R S T O RY Once strangers, now family: SHPE leaders share their best practices in preparing for the case study competition. Professionals benefitted from peer coaching during Crucial Conversations. Special recognition was given to NILA’s premier sponsors: Lockheed Martin’s Keisha Harris, U.S. Navy’s Capt. Del Rosario and TI’s Diana Johnson, Alex Casimiro and Gilberto Aguilar (SHPE’s Carmen Peralta, far left). come from fresh minds. They certainly set the bar high for next year.” In her closing remarks, she expressed her gratitude for making her last NILA as president “exciting and energetic.” CEO Gomez was also impressed by the quality of participants. “They are clearly committed to help SHPE grow and produce more Hispanic engineers and scientists,” he said. “I feel that our organization is like the space shuttle after the engines are ignited. It is rumbling and shaking, ready to take off. The engines are our people. Nothing can hold it back.” A final dose of leadership advice was received during the leadership banquet. “SHPE’s longevity speaks to its success,” said keynote speaker Alex Casimiro, director of Information Technology for Texas Instruments and a SHPE lifetime member. “Stay the course in continuing to develop top Hispanic minds. Keep finding ways to attract the best and brightest for us.” The second keynote speaker, Capt. Silvester Del Rosario of the U.S. Navy, reminded attendees to fulfill their duty of sharing everything that they learned with their members. “The future of the United States is sitting here,” he added. “The U.S. will be run by Latinos, so we must show them what we’re made of. Now is our time, so we need you to prepare as many of us as possible.” Although physically exhausted from NILA’s demanding schedule, the students were exhilarated by the experience and were anxious to rejoin their chapters. “I wish school was starting Monday,” said Christopher Amsler. “NILA definitely lived up to the ‘intense’ hype, but in a good way. You can’t help but feel more passionate about SHPE.” ■ your next great leap sharing ideas that shape innovatio on John Deere is a tech-forward company that is always looking for ideas that lead to the next innovation.
