SHPE - Fall 2008 - (Page 18) C O V E R S T O RY Case Studies Focus on Quality Soon after arriving, NILA participants were tasked with case studies to offer innovative solutions to some of the Society’s toughest issues. Student topics ranged from improving the end-of-year reporting process and increasing graduate student involvement to devising plans for effective member communication and enforcing professional behavior at conferences. Other groups found ways to improve the implementation of SHPE Speaks, a new program during National Engineers Week that promotes STEM careers among K-12 students. Professionals also analyzed the end-ofyear reporting process as well as suggested ways to make the National Point System (NPS) more appropriate for professional chapters. Another case study focused on recruiting more lifetime members and expanding their benefits. Recognizing the technical savvy of Generation Y, the committee further challenged student groups to create one-minute videos as part of their presentations. In addition to the top three winners, nine videos received honorable mention. These will be used by SHPE as recruitment and marketing tools not only on OneSHPE but also on YouTube, MySpace and Facebook, expandProfessional second place winners: Eduardo Perez, Lucia Molina, Evy Torres and Danny Cardenas. Professional first place winners: Marco Sanchez, Andrea Cortes, Brenda Hernandez, Isa Torres, Jesus Corral and Tyrone Bennett. Professional third place winners: Adrian Zaragoza, Jose Bonilla, Tanya Valencia, Priscilla Bennett, Heidi Riesgo and Jorge Renteria. MAKE OUR MISSION – to protect people and the environment – YOURS. There is no other agency in the Federal government like the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC). We are a focal point of regulation, solutions, oversight, and stewardship for national and global issues of the day in technology, research, energy policy, environmental initiatives, and beyond. Our mission is to regulate the Nation’s civilian use of byproduct, source, and special nuclear materials to ensure adequate protection of the public health and safety, to promote the common defense and security, and to protect the environment. For all our technical and scientific expertise however, the NRC is first and foremost a team of some of today’s most brilliant minds and subject matter experts. We are a diverse group representing various ethnic backgrounds, cultures, educational credentials, and experiences — all sharing a keen interest in public service and in the interplay between science, technology, and policymaking. Joining the NRC means making a conscious decision to pursue a career unlike any other in the public and private sectors. We invite you to connect with us by visiting our Web site. Explore careers, learn more about our mission and our work, avail yourself of our online career announcement and application system by visiting http://www.nrc.gov/about-nrc/employment.html.
