SHPE - Fall 2008 - (Page 26) BROWSER degree completion. After debunking myths about college, the SHPE members answered questions from students and encouraged them to attend engineering summer camps and pursue engineering after high school. During E-Week, SHPE-Texas Bay professionals representing the aerospace and petrochemical industries spoke to approximately 350 students at Southmore Intermediate School and to 50 students at Jackson Intermediate School. In addition to discussing various engineering disciplines and sharing an engineering video provided by Lockheed Martin, the SHPE members also answered student questions. “As we move toward the future, the need for engineers and scientists will be greater than the number of engineers expected to graduate each year,” said Marcos Stocco, chapter president. “SHPE-TBAC is committed to emphasizing careers in math and science during its outreach efforts. Our participation at this event was well received by the students. We hope to return again next year to spark an interest in a technical field like engineering.” In addition to community service activities, the chapter has sponsored college scholarships for more than 10 years. Once again, SHPE-ASU students and SHPE-Phoenix professionals teamed up to visit science classes at A.F. Garcia Middle School, Loma Linda Elementary School and Lattie Coor School. During the presentation, the SHPE members briefly explained the different areas of engineering and how each one contributes to society. Children were then placed in groups and given real life problems to solve. With sponsorship from Wells Fargo and 95.1FM Latino Vibe, the chapters developed age-specific activities for each group. Students in grades six through eight worked on a distance/velocity problem, finding a way to slow a rubber ball’s descent down a ramp using the least amount of materials. The elementary school students created their own silly putty and built a catapult out of spools, popsicle sticks and styrofoam cups. Teachers were thrilled to see the students actively participating. Some who would normally not get involved in class activities were among the most active in the projects. The chapters will continue to build on the partnerships with the school districts that resulted from E-Week events. ■ SHPE/UA Partnership Earlier this year, SHPE President Diana Gomez and Dr. Tom Peterson, dean of the College of Engineering at the University of Arizona signed a memorandum of understanding. SHPE and UA have partnered on multimple programs to benefit local high school students, most significantly are the AHETEMS Pre-College Symposia of the 2008 SHPE Conference and SciTech summer camps.
