SHPE - Fall 2008 - (Page 30) LEADERSHPE “architects and ambassadors” of the Society. Among their primary responsibilities are affecting membership growth and development, including building a leadership pipeline; ensuring fiscal growth; marketing and branding at the chapter and regional level; revitalizing struggling and inactive chapters; and encouraging graduating senior outreach. “We are going to go out there and support the professional programs,” said Ricardo Carlos. The RVPs hope to address the two barriers – time and money – for professional participation in SHPE. The group explored a reward program for professional chapters that succeeds in increasing their membership. Also, each RVP committed to bringing five professional members to the Lifetime Member reception at the SHPE Conference to encourage that level of commitment from professional members. Committees Barry Cordero, Gilberto Aguilar, Alma Rosales The Elections Committee will communicate a value proposition and conduct elections with the goal of improving SHPE’s image. Bylaws/Policies/Procedures will implement new academic and professional programs as policies; implement retention assessment in the Society’s annual report; and establish a SHPE Fellows Program that will identify individuals outside of the organization who exemplify the goals and values of SHPE with the goal of making them honorary members. Staff will analyze successful candidates and promote their becoming members. The National Affairs Committee will implement points in National Points System (NPS) for increasing membership and advise and implement an automated NPS interface on OneSHPE. Most of these ideas have been previously discussed at prior retreats. We are focusing on implementing these programs,” commented Diana Gomez. These programs include: • “100 Cities, One Event.” Held in conjunction with E-Week, the motivation is to perform outreach on a significant level while improving the public stature of the Society and at the same time increasing awareness of engineering. • Professional/Student Receptions at the start of each school year. These receptions will provide networking opportunities from early in the school year and jumpstart relationships between local professional and student chapters. • Regional Grad Lab or One Day Professional Program. These events will be standardized and packaged to make it easy for National Points System chapters to implement. The training will be modeled after a successful AHETEMS program currently running in several cities. The Grad Lab program will be initially offered in seven cities, one in each region, possibly in conjunction with GEM. savvy, technically sound and culturally aware Hispanic who is a part of SHPE, a large network of like-minded individuals. The SHPE Conference Committee will assess the success of professional programs; offer a strategy for continued success; establish core SHPE Conference programs; and analyze and revise policies on student workshops to ensure attendance and student satisfaction. OneSHPE will determine existing external infrastructure to support goals achievement using popular internet based tools for web hosting. The Student Chapter Advisors Committee is committed to find ways to leverage retiree Participation to improve Regional Student Reps Planning Antonina Robles, Hector Herrera, Alejandra Hernandez, Francisco Rivera, David Sequeira, Fausto Carrera, Dominic Sandoval, Delia Rios, Manny Cortez, Andrew Elizondo, Manuel Bravo The group plans to develop metrics to measure the performance of RSRs and ensure staff support; provide support for RLDC planning and budgeting; and participate, support and attend RLDC, NILA, the RSR Retreat, the National Retreat and the SHPE Conference. The group will become knowledgeable and help communicate programs to the student members. It will also encourage RSRs to nominate/recommend students for scholarships/awards. The RSR team agreed that membership growth is the greatest single challenge and that a strategic plan to meet aggressive membership growth numbers is necessary. Alternative strategies considered included incentives and recognition for chapters that meet aggressive goals. They also set a goal of reviving two student chapters per region and assisting staff in establishing new chapters. A third strategy was to share best practices and develop a feedback form that would be given out at NILA. Issues surrounding recruitment and membership retention will be discussed in a teleconference when a “Top Ten,” best practices will be developed, including details. The relevant information will be made available on a resource page on the website. Also, an award for the chapter that has most résumés uploaded to OneSHPE will be promoted at NILA and awarded at RLDC. RSRs will provide chapters with academic development best practices, with the hope of one day being able to access scientific journals through OneSHPE. “The biggest challenge now,” said Alejandra Hernandez, “ is to be sure that we are aligned with national goals and effectively communicate in ways that we can all move in the same direction.” ■ NATIONAL GOALS Membership • Increase total membership and create new chapters across the U.S. Fiscal Growth • Increase revenues and reduce indirect costs Programs • Increase participation in our excellent programs Development • Enhance academic and professional development programs • Branding of SHPE • Continue to create awareness of SHPE’s excellent image NBOD and RSR Led Goals • Establish operational measurements and implement strategic plans to continue SHPE’s growth • Transition to new governance model Staff-Led Goals • Improve quality of services to members and sponsors • Complete the transition to new governance model • Continue to add and improve our already excellent programs • Strengthen infrastructure • Accelerate our partnership strategy SHPE ❘ Fall 2008
