However, company-sponsored workshops on leadership, résumé writing and the latest technological advancements heightened anticipation for the career fair. More than 30 SHPE Jr. members from the Bronx Engineering and Technology Academy in New York City toured the U.S. Naval Academy, participated in a design/build competition and attended workshops related to essay writing, financial aid/scholarships and S.A.T. preparation. The importance of attending graduate school was emphasized during the closing dinner. Keynote speaker Michele Lezama, executive director of the National GEM Consortium, shared her inspirational personal journey and explained how an advanced degree allowed her to command her career and salary. “The conference was a tremendous accomplishment for the committee,” said Diana Gomez, SHPE National president. “I’m impressed with the work and continuous success of ETCC.” Chairwoman Monique Jackson echoed her sentiments. “We realize things were different from previous years given the changes in timeframe, focus of the event and the lagging economy,” she said. “Still recruiters found high-quality students and emphasized the need to continue having a recruiting event on the East Coast, particularly for the northeast.” Looking ahead, Jackson expects to move the conference back into early January when most students are not in class and adjust the format to offer students more employment information and networking opportunities with professionals and recruiters. ■ www.SHPE.org ❘ Fall 2008 37 http://www.shell.com/careers/usgrad http://www.shell.com/careers/usgrad http://www.SHPE.org
