During the new International Track, several Ph.D.-level engineers will discuss their latest technical applications and the challenge of globalization in the U.S. and Latin American markets. Undergraduate Workshops Technical, career and leadership development workshops presented by representatives from the nation’s top companies and organizations will give attendees the tools and knowledge to compete in corporate America and be prepared for the future. This year, workshops will offer more hands-on activities. Pre-College Symposia The Pre-College Symposia continues to broaden the horizons of high school students by encouraging them to pursue higher education and careers in science and engineering. Held over a three-day period, it will include a High School Track and a Middle School Track. More than 800 high school and 200 local middle school students will learn about exciting STEM opportunities through hands-on activities and college preparation workshops. In addition, students will get a chance to meet NASA astronaut Jose Hernandez and Jaime Escalante, the educator who inspired the movie “Stand and Deliver.” Student participants will be recruited from Phoenix, Arizona, and from the SHPE Jr. chapters across the United States. Graduate Institute Current and incoming Ph.D. students network with university faculty and administrators during a day-long series of seminars on graduate issues. These range from navigating the Ph.D. process and writing the dissertation to funding opportunities and planning an academic or research career search. Another first: professionals also may participate in Continuous Learning Certification courses and receive credit toward the Project Management Institute (PMI) credit certification. They may also opt to reinforce their technical skills related to modeling in Solid Works, using MS Project or decision modeling in Excel. The Professional Development Series (PDS) has been revamped to improve member marketability through the latest in leadership and professional development training. The new Business Development Track assists mid-level professionals in enhancing their business skills and accelerating to the next career stage through informative seminars including: project management, how to get an M.B.A, entrepreneurship and patent law.
