EVENT PREVIEW AHETEMS Teacher Program During this program, middle and New high school teachers will be introduced to scientists and engineers. They will also attend workshops and receive materials to enhance the classroom curriculum, such as with hands-on learning. This will hopefully spark the interest of students to pursue careers in the STEM fields. Local teachers are invited to attend; however, priority will be given to those teaching in predominantly Hispanic high schools. Teachers will be required to provide summaries on how they incorporate what they learn in their classroom. The program is also designed to be an integral part of SHPE’s pre-college - Ph.D. educational outreach pipeline through which Hispanic students across the United States and Puerto Rico are mentored to pursue technical careers in engineering, science, math and technology. Corporate Tours Corporate tours are available by preregistering at OneSHPE. Candidates will be selected based on the recruitment needs of the corporate sponsors. Career Expo The largest Hispanic technical career fair in the United States has opportunities for entry level and experienced engineers. More than 200 sponsoring companies and organizations are expected to attend, many of which will be providing on-the-spot interviews for available jobs and internships. Graduate School Fair Attendees will meet with representatives from more than 50 colleges, universities and funding agencies that offer advanced degree programs and fellowships in science, technology, engineering and math. Networking Whether one is looking for potential employees or employers, business partners, mentors, community leaders or friends, the SHPE Conference is the place to be! Additional networking opportunities will be available for professionals and students. Entertainment Adding more spice to the Southwest will be Phoenix’s own Fuerza Caribe, whose nine-member band specializes in salsa, 48 merengue and bachata. SHPE is also proud to present the Grammy-nominated Fulanito, one of the first groups to combine merengue with bachata, reggaeton, rap, hip hop and house. Fulanito will close this year’s SHPE Conference con broche de oro. Gala Banquet An opportunity to network in an elegant and social setting, this celebration honors the nation’s top companies and individuals with the presentation of the STAR Awards. Professional chapters are awarded for their local contributions to education, community outreach, organizational development and professional development. Student chapters are recognized under the categories of Most Improved Chapter, Chapter Development, Professional Development, Leadership Development, Academic Development and Outreach and Community Service. Also, awards are presented to one professional and one student chapter per region, from which two professional and three student chapters are selected as national winners. COMPETITIONS Business Development Competition SHPE’s top professional members New are challenged to use their engineering expertise and business savvy to solve a real-world business problem posed by SHPE sponsors. It is an exercise in using the skills necessary to reach executive levels. Each winning team will receive $10,000 cash. There will be one winning team per business problem. If chosen, each team will have an opportunity to sell its solution to the sponsor. National Academic Olympiad Consisting of a written exam and an oral competition, the Academic Olympiad is a team competition designed to test the techniSHPE ❘ Fall 2008
