SHPE - Fall 2008 - (Page 50) EVENT PREVIEW cal knowledge of SHPE’s Hispanic talent. Each official SHPE student chapter sending 10 or more undergraduate students to the conference is required to form one team consisting of three contestants and one alternate. All contestants, including the alternate, must be current SHPE undergraduate student members. (Students who are not current members must become members by the time of registration.) Each team is advised to include a variety of technical backgrounds, as the questions asked during the Academic Olympiad will not be limited to any one particular subject. Technical Paper and Poster Competitions These competitions highlight the research achievements of SHPE students by allowing them to present their research in a public forum. SHPE invites graduate and undergraduate students who are SHPE members in good standing to submit their work, as long as the topic is related to the technical fields of engineering and science. A panel of professionals will judge each entry on: its relevance to broader society; originality of work; inclusion of new concepts; innovations or data; technical content; written presentation and clarity; and thoroughness of research and work presented in the abstract. AHETEMS Design Competition The AHETEMS Design Competition is intended to stimulate the creative, intellectual and entrepreneurial spirit; develop technical presentation skills; and instill the cooperation essential in a technical design project. This competition tests the technical and business intellect of Hispanic engineering and science students in the fabrication of a cost-effective product. Competitors must research, design, build and test a marketable product and write a relevant technical paper within an allotted time frame based on the competition theme, lunar surface systems. Extreme Engineering Challenge A non-stop, 24-hour competition pits teams against each other to find out which can out-design, out-develop and out-promote their newly engineered projects. This year, the stakes and awards are even greater for this popular event. To sign up, attend registration on Wednesday, November 12, 2008 at 6:30 p.m. at the Phoenix Convention Center. 50 STUDENT REGISTRATION There is only one student registration lodging plan, which includes shared, quadruple occupancy accommodations for up to four nights from Wednesday – Saturday, access to all workshops, general sessions, career/grad exposition and tickets to major events.
