SHPE - Fall 2008 - (Page 54) I P C U P D AT E PG&E Joins Council Welcome PSEG Within the next three to five years, Pacific Gas & Electric (PG&E), the number one green energy company in the nation and new member of the Industrial PartnerSHPE Council, will be looking to recruit approximately 45 percent of its total work force. Because of impending retirements, the percentage is even higher in engineering. “As an organization that is in the midst of transforming itself, we see SHPE as a critical partner in bringing in both recent graduates and seasoned professionals with new ideas that look toward a greener way to do business,” explained Marya Bloodsaw, acting diversity recruiting manager. According to university relations manager Julie Bonnie and recruiter Anndee Francisco, PG&E’s decision to join the IPC was greatly influenced by several employees who also are active SHPE members: Kathy Lopez, a senior computing specialist and Fresno Professional Chapter president, and Kathleen Gonzales, general construction entry engineer and Region I vice president. As PG&E’s involvement steadily grew over the past year, joining the IPC became the means to gain more value from its relationship with SHPE. For PG&E, recruitment won’t be the only measure of success of the relationship. “The retention of our employees is critical,” said Bonnie. “Energy is such a specialized field that unless you have that longevity, you really lose a lot of the very specific and targeted knowledge that is critical to our business performance.” With many employees preparing for retirement and transferring their “tribal knowledge” to those remaining, it becomes more important than ever to develop partnerships that enhance the company’s ability to retain talent, she said. Another success parameter will be in helping retain SHPE members as they transition from student to professional chapters. “Just as SHPE will be a strong partner in the growth of the company to reflect its community,” Bonnie added, “we will help SHPE grow in its membership because we are supportive of employees pursuing a professional affiliation related to their work.” Bloodsaw agreed. “Such a big part of an engineer’s growth depends on involvement on the professional side, such as talking to peers in other industries,” she stated. What makes these diversity efforts effective is an internal alignment that starts among PG&E’s top executives. “That puts real power behind what we’re doing,” Bloodsaw explained, “and that gives us the freedom to do it right, so that 20 years from now, [the relationship] is still here.” With approximately 20,000 employees, San Francisco-based PG&E is one of the largest combination natural gas and electric utilities in the United States, serving approximately 15 million people in a 70,000square-mile service area in Northern and Central California. According to the company, a large part of PG&E’s success stems from its ability to tap the full potential of its diverse employee population. It demonstrates respect for diversity through all aspects of business, from outside suppliers to the makeup of its work force. For more information, please visit www.pge.com/college. PSEG began its involvement with the Society during the fourth quarter of 2007 as part of a broader diversity and inclusion strategy which includes strategic diversity partnerships with other organizations like SHPE. PSEG recognizes the importance of and is committed to partnering with organizations such as SHPE that have well-established programs for developing Latino professionals. “In our business of energy and energy-related services, building a pipeline of diverse professionals is not a business priority, it is a business necessity − an imperative that is critical to the growth and future success of our organization,” explained Ramona Blake, Diversity & Inclusion manager. As the partnership unfolds, PSEG intends to expand its efforts and become more involved in SHPE’s various projects and initiatives, including the National Institute for Leadership Advancement and SHPE Jr. chapters. According to Blake, success will be measured by the number of SHPE events PSEG supports throughout the year and the number of viable referrals and hires the company attains through its collaboration with the Society. PSEG is a publicly traded energy and energy services company headquartered in New Jersey. It is also the largest utility provider in the state. From a recruitment standpoint, its immediate and future needs for engineers are growing in all areas, especially in the mechanical, chemical, electrical and nuclear engineering disciplines. Ranked 178 among the 2006 Fortune 500, PSEG yielded $12.2 billion in revenues in 2007 and employs more than 10,000 employees.
