SHPE - Fall 2008 - (Page 57) PROGRAMS & SERVICES Summers Enriched Via Internships The AHETEMS Foundation currently manages two internship programs with the Department of Energy and NASA Marshall Space Flight Center. It also partners with several other organizations to provide summer internships for qualified SHPE members. Selection is based on an application process that includes academic coursework, scientific interests and recommendations as well as other criteria specific to each opportunity. What follows are experiences from some of this year’s recipients. For more information, visit www.ahetems.org. Freeport McMoRan Copper and Gold Intern-Scholarship This is the first year SHPE has partnered with Freeport to provide two students with intern-scholarship opportunities. Javier Salas from the University of Texas at Arlington and Sylvia Echeverria from Pima Community College, who demonstrated an interest in studying engineering or mining, each received a $5,000 renewable scholarship and a paid, 10-week summer 2009 internship with Freeport. DOE Science Undergraduate Laboratory (SULI) Internship In its first year, the DOE SULI program and SHPE partnership have gotten off to a great start. With many SHPE members applying and the high volume of eligible candidates, this internship program is sure to grow in the coming years. SHPE has joined forces with SACNAS and MAES in partnering with the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) Office of Science to offer several talented students the opportunity to participate in the 10week Science Undergraduate Laboratory Internships (SULI). This year’s recipients included: Reynaldo Lopez, who was assigned to Lawrence Livermore Laboratory; Cristina Clancey-Rivera, who was assigned to Argonne National Laboratory; as well as Abdiel Quetz and Lazaro Rodriguez, who were assigned to Oak Ridge National Laboratory. www.SHPE.org ❘ Fall 2008 Department of Energy (DOE) Internship Starting in 2006 this internship has developed in many ways. Through the partnership with SHPE, DOE has been able to provide internship opportunities to the growing number of students interested in working in their offices. This year’s recipient, Jonathan Clark of Mendocino Community College, received a $5,000 summer stipend and travel to a 10-week internship at DOE headquarters in Washington, D.C. Jonathan Clark, a computer science sophomore, was assigned to the Department of Energy Office of Health, Safety and Security. As part of the information management team he helped design and pilot a project to convert the DOE headquarters digital video security system to an IP-based infrastructure. “Seeing the hardware I learned about in class implemented in an business environment has been very rewarding,” he said. “I also enjoyed learning about the planning and procedures that happen before you even start using the system. This internship really made me want a job in the networking field even more.” National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) Internship This is the first year that SHPE has partnered with the Department of Transportation, National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. Through this partnership, students gain the opportunity to explore and understand professional practices within NHTSA as well as valuable practical experience through exposure to research and development, technology, administration and Federal government environment. The partnership also allows NHTSA to include SHPE students in its pool of potential future employees who have had meaningful work experiences with the Federal government and who will consider NHTSA as a serious career choice. This year’s recipients were Vaneet Loomba, Solano Community College; Jose Carrillo-Parada, Napa Valley College; and Alain Anderson, Texas A&M University and former SHPE Jr. member from United Technology High School (Laredo, TX). Each student received a $5,000 summer stipend and travel to a 10-week internship at NHTSA headquarters in Washington, D.C. Electrical engineering student Jose Carrillo-Parada was assigned to work in the Office of Data Acquisition of the National Center of Statistics and Analysis. He was responsible for analyzing the data and statistics of traffic accidents in the United States, attending meetings on how to prevent future accidents and communicating that message to the Hispanic community. “The most significant experience of my internship has been working around a lot of government employees,” he said. “I have a clearer idea of my career and how my major can help develop better future technology.” CDM Intern-Scholarship At CDM Humberto Branco worked on various elements of water treatment projects. Now in its third year of partnership with the Society, CDM continues to be impressed with the number and quality of SHPE students applying for its summer opportunity. Recipients of this year’s CDM InternScholarship went to: Edgar Nunez, San Joaquin Delta College; Nahum TorresArenas, The University of Texas at Arlington; and graduate student Humberto Branco, California State University, Sacramento. Each student received a $6,000 scholarship as well as a $2,000 summer stipend and travel to a 10-week internship at a CDM office in Orlando, Florida; Dallas, Texas; or Walnut Creek, California. Humberto Branco, an electrical engineering student, was assigned to a CDM facility in Phoenix, Arizona, where he designed elements that ranged from pumps and 57 http://www.ahetems.org http://www.SHPE.org
