As engineering moved through the 1990s and into the new millennium, the pace turned into a jog. Today, as globalization continues to expand competition, we are sprinting to keep up. Tomorrow’s engineers will encounter taller hurdles in the job market, so we must prepare to run faster and smarter not only to avoid being left behind but, more importantly, to stay ahead of the pack. At the entry level, all engineers have similar education and training, but SHPE students have an edge. As part of the SHPE experience, they handle challenges beyond the academic scope, using their engineering training to think outside the box and achieve success. For example, many have led a team of diverse students in establishing a SHPE chapter, organizing an event or even putting together a regional conference. Amid a sea of engineers, employers seek individuals with insight and vision to develop unique solutions to complex problems. SHPE members are honing these critical skills. So, as SHPE continues to evolve in its quest to become The Source of Quality Hispanic Engineers and Technical Talent, members can be proud to list SHPE as one of the organizations in which they are actively involved. I witnessed the SHPE edge while visiting several Regional Leadership Development Conferences (RLDCs) during the spring. I was impressed by how well our chapters had adapted to moving the SHPE Conference into the fall timeframe. As the spring regional conferences evolved and expanded, our students stepped up to the challenge, adjusting and even reinvigorating their RLDCs to be some of the most exciting and successful conferences I have ever seen. The determination and excellence I observed in our student members greatly encouraged me about the future of our organization and even our country. SHPE is very fortunate to have this caliber of student leaders who very soon will be the sought-after engineers of tomorrow. I applaud these SHPE students for what they are accomplishing today and what they will become tomorrow. While we may not know what tomorrow will bring, we do know that we must stay in the race if we ever hope to win. Such endurance requires adaptability, flexibility, foresight, creativity and a vast imagination. As the pace of life in our country and the rest of the world continues to speed up, our current sprint won’t be enough. As some struggle to keep pace and even fall behind, SHPE members should look ahead to the day when being the fastest on the ground will no longer be good enough.
