SHPE - Fall 2008 - (Page 60) PROGRAMS & SERVICES 2008 MUST Symposium While some students spent their spring break on the beach or skiing, others spent it at a NASA facility. In March, the NASA Motivating Undergraduates in Science and Technology (MUST) Program invited 45 of its scholars to NASA Glenn Research Center in Cleveland, Ohio, for the first annual MUST Symposium. During the two-day program, scholars met one another, listened to motivational talks, toured the NASA Glenn Research Center and learned about professional advancement opportunities available through NASA. They also met NASA employees such as scientist James Free, who works on the research and development of the rocket and service module for the next mission to the moon. “There is nothing better in learning than the handson opportunity you have with MUST,” he said. “It is the first step to get you where you want to go.” “NASA is committed to strengthening meet the other students in the program and find out some of their experiences.” SHPE member and second year scholar interning at NASA Glenn, Jorge Alberto Jimenez said, “NASA is a wonderful place because it focuses on science and it is doing cutting-edge stuff.” When reflecting on how the NASA MUST Program had changed his life, he added, “I have higher standards for myself now.” The NASA MUST Program is coordinated by SHPE AHETEMS, the Hispanic College Fund (HCF) and the United Negro College Fund Special Programs (UNCFSP). Each year incoming freshman, sophomores and juniors are invited to apply for the NASA MUST Program, which provides a half college tuition scholarship, up to $10K and a MUST summer internship at a NASA facility. Students also had the opportunity to share their views and advice to succeeding in the MUST Program and at their NASA internships. One new scholar, Leslie Sabbann, explained, “I was very grateful for this opportunity. I advise other SHPE Jr. students to fully appreciate the Society by filling out as many scholarships as they can and by preparing as much as possible for their college career.” Gonzalez’s SHPE experience led him to share similar advice. “SHPE Jr. has gotten me involved with other sciences that I would not have otherwise explored,” he said. “Embrace the organization. Take advantage of the things that SHPE Jr. offers such as the conference, where one is able to see all the different types of jobs that can be attained after earning a college degree. Also learn as much as possible in the science field, because the Science Bowl is a blast.” Simental will be pursuing chemistry at Syracuse University and aspires to become either a high school chemistry teacher or a forensic scientist.
