SHPE - Fall 2008 - (Page 62) PROGRAMS & SERVICES memberships as college students. Denisse Alanis, a Dallas SHPE Jr. member and recent graduate of the North Mezquite High School (Mezquite, TX) was one of the top students in her class. She was accepted by every school to which she applied for industrial engineering, including Georgia Tech, Texas A&M and the University of Texas at Austin. Her decision to attend Texas Tech was based on the full scholarship it offered her as well as her desire to compliment an engineering degree with a Juris doctorate to become an attorney. SHPE Jr. member Veronica Torres graduated as valedictorian of her class at Roosevelt High School (Washington, D.C.). She also received a $3,000 scholarship from the Hispanic Heritage Foundation in recognition of her excellence in leadership. She will be starting school at George Washington University in the fall. Free Membership SHPE AHETEMS is pleased to announce that all graduating SHPE Jr. members will be receiving a free, one-year SHPE membership. New Chapters SHPE welcomes the newest members of the SHPE Jr. familia: Hispanic Youth Voice of Tampa and Highland High School (Albuquerque, NM). ■ engineering junior at New Mexico State University. The scientific complexity of questions requires expert scientific judges, which included Dr. Carlos Amaya (Ph.D. in biology), Sibendu Som (abd. in mechanical engineering, University of Illinois at Chicago) and Gary Cruz (abd. in science and technology policy, University of Arizona). The RSBs increase interest in science and math among Hispanic students by introducing them to the DOE’s National Science Bowl, which was established in 1991. Through its collaboration with the DOE, SHPE has reached out to hundreds of students, and the popularity of the event continues to increase its demand. AHETEMS would like to express its sincere gratitude to the coordinators who were instrumental in the success of these regional events and to the DOE Office of Science for its generous support. Congratulations to the winning teams, students, coaches and schools! ■ Third Year Regional Science Bowl Success By Luis Mendoza-Natividad In the first Regional Science Bowl conducted by AHETEMS in 2006, eight high school teams competed at the University of Texas at Arlington. In 2008, AHETEMS conducted five high school and three middle school competitions, drawing the participation of more than 450 students in nearly 100 teams. Sponsored by the U.S. Department of Energy, the Regional Science Bowl (RSB) is a fast-paced quiz that carries the excitement of an initial round robin competition which then determines the seeding of a double elimination tournament. It’s like a regular season and then play-offs. With so much excitement, RSB elevates academic merit to the pedestal commonly occupied by athletics, giving smart kids a chance at the spotlight. The winner of each regional competition earns an all-expenses-paid trip to the national competitions which are held in Washington, D.C., for high school students and Golden, Colorado, for middle school students. Second and third place finalists also receive a technology/engineeringrelated prize. Volunteers are essential to the success of each RSB. Coordinators spend six months planning the event. Local volunteers handle logistics and serve as moderators and judges as well as scorekeepers and timekeepers. The excitement of the competition is quickly absorbed by the volunteers. “If I had known volunteering was this fun, I would volunteer more often,” said Christopher Taylor, a civil A B C D E F Winners of the high school RSBs included (a) Roosevelt H.S. (Chicago, IL); (b) Hanks H.S. (El Paso, TX); (c) Palmeto H.S. (Maimi, FL); (d) Texas Academy of Math & Science (Denton, TX); and (e) St. John's School (San Juan, PR).
