SHPE - Fall 2008 - (Page 72) LEADERSHPE David Sequeira ❙ Region I avid Sequeira is a fifth year civil engineering student at California State Polytechnic University, San Luis Obispo. His SHPE involvement began as a transfer student in 2005 and progressed to becoming chapter president last year. During his term, the chapter grew to 166 members, becoming the largest in the region. Twice it was awarded Chapter of the Month, and its outreach programs received university recognition. Its members received more than $10,000 in scholarships, and the chapter raised more than $30,000 in funds. Sequeira’s proudest achievement is motivating his peers to join SHPE and helping the Hispanic community. As RSR, he will share the chapter’s strategies for success to increase fundraising and bolster small and struggling chapters, especially at the community college level. D develop into a stronger leader, a key characteristic that I couldn’t have accomplished without the help of SHPE,” she said. In all her roles, she has kept a sharp focus on STEM outreach for K-12 students and mentoring programs for chapter members. As RSR, she is committed to expanding these efforts, especially among underrepresented Hispanics. Juan Manuel Cortez ❙ Region V anny Cortez is a mechanical engineering junior minoring in mathematics at Oklahoma State University, where he is currently serving a second term as student chapter president. During his first term, he helped double the chapter’s membership from the previous year. He is also a member of the Multicultural Engineering Program Student Advisory Board, which named him Executive of the Year in 2007-2008. Also, as a freshman, he was recognized with the SHPE Freshman of the Year Award. “As RSR, I hope to unite the Region by getting more chapters involved in regional activities,” Cortez said. “I also intend to increase membership in all chapters, initiate several programs to recruit high school students, promote STEM in the region and enhance member development.” M Fausto Carrera ❙ Region II senior majoring in both electrical and computer engineering at California State Polytechnic University, Pomona, Fausto Carrera served two terms as the chapter’s webmaster and as RLDC 2007 treasurer before becoming vice regional student representative for district four last year. He also played a part in Cal Poly’s first “Ask a Future Engineer” EWeek event. During the College of Engineering’s open house, high school students interacted with engineering students to learn about college life, the various engineering disciplines and the benefits of joining SHPE. As RSR, Carrera will strive to strengthen the region’s chapters as well as enhance relations between professional and student chapters. He also will develop programs to increase community involvement and heighten awareness of STEM education. A Andrew Elizondo ❙ Region VI fifth year senior, Andrew Elizondo is studying engineering mechanics and astronautics at the University of WisconsinMadison. After a stint as webmaster, he recently completed a term as student chapter president, during which he helped standardize its processes and forms. However, his greatest accomplishment was working with the chapter to increase membership by 275 percent, from 8 to 22. As he takes over regional leadership, Elizondo plans to continue the efforts of the previous RSR. “I really want to increase overall membership, but I especially want to strengthen the lines of communication among chapters and between chapters and me,” he said. “I also have the goal that one of the next Chapter of the Year Award recipients comes from Region VI.” A Dominic Sandoval ❙ Region III ince 2005, Dominic Sandoval has been an active SHPE member at New Mexico Institute of Mining and Technology. He is currently a senior majoring in electrical engineering with a double minor in mathematics and psychology. Prior to seeking a regional position, he served as the chapter’s public relations officer. In this role, he helped SHPE-NMT recruit a substantial number of new members. As Region III student representative, Sandoval will use his communication, organizational and networking skills to increase communication among chapters. He is confident that when chapters share their ideas and best practices, the region as a whole benefits, becoming stronger and more successful. “If we work together, we will gain nothing but forward progress,” he said. S Manuel Bravo ❙ Region VII n electrical engineering senior at the University of South Florida, Manuel Bravo first became a SHPE leader as assistant to the vice president. That year, the chapter’s success was recognized by SHPE National, and it spurred him to take further leadership roles. Most recently completing a term as external vice president, Bravo helped create the region’s first SHPE Jr. Chapter, The Hispanic Youth Voice of Tampa, which is composed of 12 high school students. He also was chairman for the 2008 Regional Leadership Development Conference. Working closely with regional and national student leaders to execute the event encouraged him to serve on an even larger scale. As RSR, Bravo will continue to work with SHPE’s leaders to grow and strengthen Region VII. ■ A Delia F. Rios ❙ Region IV A n industrial engineering senior at Rutgers University, Delia Rios has been a SHPE member since freshman year. Since then, she has held the positions of community service chairwoman, secretary and, most recently, president of the student chapter. Rios credits SHPE for helping her secure summer internships with Johnson & Johnson’s Orthoclinical Diagnostics and General Electric Transportation. “Being exposed to corporate America is helping me 72 SHPE ❘ Fall 2008
