SHPE - Fall 2008 - (Page 73) REGIONAL ROUNDUP From the NUR As The Source for Quality Hispanic Engineers and Technical Talent, SHPE is dedicated to developing technical talent and improving the leadership skills of our members. I invite you to embark on a new challenge: to reach out to young minds and encourage them to pursue science, technology, mathematics and engineering careers. At one point or another, we have all needed the support and advice of someone who has “been there and done that.” To help increase the pipeline of future engineers and scientists, your experience as STEM students is needed today. In today’s global economy, we can no longer afford younger generations to be disinterested in math and science. As we start a successful academic year, let us work together toward a common goal. I challenge you to become a SHPE and engineering ambassador. Submitted by Alejandra M. Hernandez, National Undergraduate Representative SHPE-UC Berkeley put graduating seniors in the spotlight. REGION I Alaska ❚ California (Northern) ❚ Nevada (Northern) ❚ Oregon ❚ Washington RSR Update RVP I Kathleen Gonzales and I have many ideas that we look forward to implementing to have a successful year. Our main goals include increasing membership, establishing new SHPE student and Jr. chapters and strengthening all chapters. Our region is proud to offer many events, which range from RLDC to a soccer tournament. With the help of our regional sponsors, we plan to award academic scholarships to Region I members. I am honored to have been chosen for this position. I look forward to working hard for Region I and making sure that all chapters have the necessary tools to make the region the best it can be. Remember, if you ain’t one, you ain’t SHPE. Submitted by David Sequeira Regional Student Representative successful in educating younger generations about engineering. The impact FMP has made on these students will last a lifetime. We are thankful for the generous contributions to FMP, and we hope to continue helping high school students discover the world of engineering through a series of interactive workshops, team competitions and local company tours. Submitted by Nelson Robles Student Chapter President California State Polytechnic new officers and the presentation of the Outstanding Member Award. It also allowed the seniors a chance to thank their families and all who have helped them to graduate. After the keynote speaker and dinner, each of the 15 graduating seniors had the opportunity to address students, family, company representatives and faculty. They received a sash to wear at graduation as well as a gift selected by the outgoing HES president. Companies that supported the chapter throughout the school year were recognized with certificates. Among the company representatives were members of the local SHPE professional chapter. The banquet ended with a slideshow presentation, including a chronological display of pictures for each senior. Submitted by Rachel Mellinger Student Chapter Social Vice President California State University, Sacramento Fun and games during SHPE-Cal Poly SLO’s ACE barbecue. University, San Luis Obispo Puget Sound Professional Chapter In the spring, SHPE-PSC hosted its 22nd Annual Banquet Celebration to celebrate the chapter’s accomplishments and everyone’s hard work in making it an amazing year. Held at the Washington Athletic Club in downtown Seattle, it included a networking cocktail hour with entertainment from local boleros, dinner and dancing. Dinner included a highlight video of the year, as well as awards for SHPE-PSC and SHPE-UW. The honored keynote speaker was Enrique Rodriguez, corporate vice president of the Microsoft TV division. His accomplishments and words were truly inspiring as he motivated us not only to be proud of our Latino culture but also to embrace and celebrate the differences in those around us. SHPE-PSC is very proud to have organized a variety of activities centered on the three pillars of community outreach, career development and professional networking. These contribute to fulfilling our mission to be The Source for Quality Hispanic Engineers and Technical Talent. Submitted by Elizabeth Galaviz SHPE-Cal Poly SLO members regularly dedicate one hour a week to provide math, science and English tutoring for local K-12 students enrolled in the English Learners departments at Laguna Lake Middle School and Bishops Peak Elementary School. During our end-of-year ACE barbeque, we awarded a computer scholarship. Middle school students had to prepare a poster and essay about why computers were important and why they needed a computer as well as a brief biography about themselves and their career goals. The day was filled with exciting games for the kids and SHPE members. The event also had an academic focus, as the middle school students interviewed Cal Poly students about the importance of attending college. At the end of the day, both the middle school and Cal Poly students went home tired but happy. Submitted by Jaime O. Sanchez Student Chapter President With the help of our advisor Marianna Rivera and Dr. Emir Jose Macari, dean of the College of Engineering and Computer Science, SHPE-CSUS has been at the forefront in promoting higher education among hundreds of local kids and their parents. Adding to the several outreach events in which we participated, we also incorporated a pre-college track into our RLDC. We were invigorated when the university recognized our RLDC as the Best Community Event of the Year. “Festival de La Familia,” a Sacramento event that attracts thousands, was a hit with the community. Children and their families experienced hands-on engineering as they made miniature adobe bricks and constructed houses. It was really exciting to engage our gente and see whole families working together to replicate their grandparents’ homes. Our chapter is proud to continue its efforts to generate professionals and leaders that serve the community.
