SHPE - Spring08 - (Page 10) BROWSER Raffle Winner Drives Away with 2007 Chevy HHR Making the Most of Your Internship Experience Editor’s Note: SHPE students are just weeks away SHPE would like to congratulate the grand prize winner of the second AHETEMS/SHPE National Raffle, Lakisha Thomas, a small business owner and fourth grade teacher with the Dallas Independent School District. In addition to the General Motors grand prize, other prizes included round trip tickets with Delta Air Lines, tickets for the NASCAR Nextel Cup and a wide range of electronic prizes. With members in charge of selling tickets, half the proceeds went directly to their local chapters, the other half to the AHETEMS Scholarship Endowment. Winning tickets were drawn at the fall SHPE Conference. from starting their summer internships. As they prepare to get a taste of the professional or research environment, the Career Center at the University of California, Berkeley, offers some guidelines to maximize the overall experience. Meet with your supervisor on a regular basis If your supervisor does not seem to make time for you, don’t take it personally. She/he may be busy with other work commitments. Take the initiative to schedule meetings with your supervisor. It’s important to let her/him know what you have accomplished and to be able to ask questions. This is also a time to get constructive feedback on the job you are doing. Be sure to get a final evaluation at the end of your internship. Maintain a positive attitude As an intern, you may be asked to do tasks that you consider beneath your talents.
